So I have been on the Specific Carbohydrate Diet for about nine weeks now. There has been some minor cheating the first two weeks, and the last two, but a solid five weeks of misery in the middle.

My goal has been to improve bowel function, including nutrient absorption. The results are mixed. I went eight weeks without an iron infusion for the first time in eight years. So improved nutrient absorption seems to be the biggest gain. My output is slightly improved, but the frequency of bm's remains the same. And, unfortunately, I am still unable to digest most fruits and vegetables, which makes SCD almost unbearable.

So the mystery I need to solve; what is contributing to the improved nutrient absorption? It is unlikely I will be able to maintain this restrictive diet of meat, fish, chicken, and dairy in the long run. Any ideas, suggestions, thoughts, etc. from my expert peers are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Susan

I have been eating almost everything since my takedown and all my blood reports are as good as normal. I am a month down with takedown now having 6x in day and once in night. I can eat all fruits and vegs raw. If you arent able to digest them try making a smoothie of any fruit/fruits of your choice with its skin off. For vegs you can try boiling or steaming it a little just enough to maintain the crunch and reduce the fiber too. For my iron levels I drink wheatgrass juice first think in morning. I only avoid plain milk(cold) thats probably the only thing that gets me sick. Whenever you eat eggs, meat , fish or just anything thats high in protein always have some fibrous foods along helps alot in digesting them like some alice of brown breads or a bowl of salad . Good luck 👍

Well oi your not bleeding, your not pregnant and you have enough iron in your diet then it would seem to be an absorption issue (which you saying above)

Iron is absorbed in the small intestine, which in us is a little shorter because of the jpouch operation.  Depending on how many redo's you have had this may or may not be the problem.   Doctirs will probably tell you that you will need regular iron transfusions on account of your condition.

People with celiacs disease often have iron deficiency due to absorption issues, they can  get similar results as you by eliminating gluten.  How is your gluten intake on SCD? If low that may be an explanation.

If you can track it down to gluten you stand a chance of overcoming by eliminating it to improve symptoms, as you heal (it is thought gluten can damage the gut lining in those succeptable) you may be able to start introducing fruit and veg again.  These in themselves are anti inflammatory healing foods.

Do you take digestive enzymes?

Bobish if I'm pregnant at 60, I have worse problems then anemia. LOL.

I  have been suspicious of gluten. There is none in the SCD. I tested negative for gluten intolerance about seven years ago. But I don't know how accurate or sensitive these tests are.

SCD excludes all refined and processed sugars. Honey and natural sugars in fruit are allowed. I know sugars are an speed bomb for me, and I love them. A bottle of white Zin would be all the prep I need before a scope. LOL. But is sugar contributing to absorption issues?

I would love to limit the inflammation. It has been really painful since my last redo.

Thanks for the feedback.

well sugar is what yeasts feed on.. If you have an abundance of bad bacteria in your gut, sugars would feed them for sure.

Bad gut balance comes from poor diet, but is surely helped by our medical situation too.  This is where probiotics come in.   Probiotics would work better in a healthy happy gut lining though.... so id be tempted to try both together.

FWIW I'm just playing around with sugar now.  If I stick to the recommended daily intake (30g for an adult) then I fair much better than if I don't..
