Hi all, I'm seven weeks out from perm ileo surgery. All is good, but I had my first leak three days ago. I had been using stomadhesive paste to build up a dip near my stoma. I guess as the swelling in my belly has gone down, so has the dip and I leaked. Then yesterday, I had a massive blowout from what I think may have been a blockage. My stoma was active all day, very unusual, but I knew something wasn't right. Some watery output, some thicker. Unfortunately, I can't see through my bag (I got the wrong order and figured I'd make the best of it - never again), but the stoma felt hard and swollen. Had dinner with my husband before a concert we were attending - in the restaurant, my belly got very full and distended, especially behind the stoma. I massaged as discreetly as I could. As we walked to the music hall, I felt this release in my belly and behind my stoma and that's when the eruption started, with major leaking all over myself and my clothes (sorry for the gross description.)  We had to go home, I needed to shower and change, and my stoma was literally spewing like a toothpaste tube gone wild. Does anyone have experience with blockages? Does this sound like it was a blockage? I ate slivered almonds for two days which I thought I had chewed very well. I guess not. Thanks in advance for any info.

Sorry for your experience. Hard to say if it was a blockage.  If the out put after the initial eruption was mostly liquid I would say yes. There seems to be flushing after a blockage and it can last from a few hours to a few days. With me it also tends to have a particular smell.

If your not using them I would really recommend you add barrier strips to your pouch set up. I use Coloplast Brava barrier strips and they both help in securing the pouch and in retaining any leakage.

The barrier strips by Coloplast are two half circles maybe one inch wide and you place them over the edge of the pouch that is on the skin so that they are attached to the pouch flange and also onto the skin. They over lap each other. They both hold the pouch on securely (no need for belts) and can help keep any leaks from getting out. Nothing is perfect but since using them I really dont think about leaks or always having a "change" with me. Its been several years since I began using them and I have not had a day time leak.  My only leaks have been caused by balloning at night when sleeping where the pressure was just so strong it caused a small break in the seal letting the gas and a bit of output out. Happened maybe twice in two plus years  If the filters worked better this wouldnt happen.

They just came out with a souped up version that has more meat to it,  to be even more secure. I have a sample but it would require shaving quite a bit more of my body so I havent tried them.
