Has anyone experienced horrible abscesses and cellulitis after your Jpouch was diverted?  My daughter went through sheer hell when her pouch failed. She was having multiple fistulae and abscesses for 2 years prior to the failure. Then one day, it finally completely failed. Her bowel movements no longer could be controlled and was oozing out of every fistula and abscess drainage sites. She was in horrible pain.  She was already scheduled for diversion but they had to go in and divert her pouch under emergency. Her surgeon told us that it'll be wonderful after that and she'll lead a close to normal life. She was looking so forward to this.

After close to one month stay in the hospital due to complications, she finally was discharged. Her abscess was looking 90% better after some strong IV antibiotics.  Within 3 weeks after her discharge, she got another abscess. Her anal area is now red and swollen and she can barely sit down.

They operated again (I &D) and put in more drains and said she'll be better now.  Here it is, just about 2 weeks later and the cellulitis/abscess is back.

I don't know what to do or what to think!  She is now 85 pounds from all her weight loss. She was 115 before all this started. She is constantly tired and out of breath after walking across a room.

Her quality of life has not improved.  Has anyone had similar experience? I'm really desperate for some answers.  Thanks for taking the time to read this.

Hi,

i really feel for you!! I have/had 2 fistulas but have not suffered anything that horrible since being diverted. If she keeps getting abscesses, I wonder if the whole fistula tract was not addressed or if the fistula keeps breaking off into other fistulas and causing more problems. Is she on any medication? I am having a hard time gaining weight after being diverted with my j pouch still intact.  I am hanging out between 105-110 pounds (normally 120 pounds) which is a 5-10 pound gain after 7 months so maybe things are finally improving little by little. Has she ever gotten TPN to help with the situation? Have they looked at her small bowel to look for disease there/absorption issues? How is her appetite? When I was at the worst with my fistulas/abscesses, I just did not feel like eating. The pain was so horrible that eating just seemed like another thing to do when I felt like doing nothing. I hope you can get some answers and she can get some relief. I really hate life with fistulas and abscesses. No fun at all! What is the plan with her J pouch? Are they going to try and save it or is she going to have her whole rectal area removed? Sorry if there are a lot of questions and babbling in this post. I just typed things out as I thought of them with no attempt to put them in order!! Hang in there! I hope it gets better soon.....very soon!! She has already suffered too long!

This sounds just awful and I am so sorry that your daughter is having all these issues.

This will not fix her issues with abscess/fistulas, but have they discussed TPN or some other type of nutrition therapy to get some weight on? It is nearly impossible to fight all these constant infections when there is such a nutritional deficit.
