Daily Medication

I have a JPouch since 1998, can anyone tell me if they have to take a daily medicine to slow the bowel down, really I want to know if anyone has to take a daily dose of naro to slow the bowel down I have been taking Tylenol 3 for some time now an have recently moved to another state which really sucks my primary doctor back home prescribed me 2 a day it really helped to slow down my bowel an when I have a flare it helps with the pain as well as the muscle/joint pain that I experience on a regular still haven't figured out why that is...anyway it's quite annoying an your made to feel strange when you get all new doctors an they try an change up what has been working for you, so my new primary doctor prescibed me tylonel 3 1/2 a pill twice a day an before I took 1 in the day an 1 at night, now I have even increase times I'm going to the bathroom was 6 to 8 now it has increase to about 12, this doctor asked me why do I take metamucil well this make my stools bulk an formed an I have been on it since I left the hospital this made me wonder if he knows what he's talking about...I had a scope done by him recently and he said he seen a little inflammation but nothing to worry about make a long story short my first visit there he wanted to start me on Asacol an some cholestyramine oral he says it bulks the stools well it gives me heart burn so bad I can't tolerate it an when I'm working out since I've been trying the asacol it has made my heart rate increase an I feel light headed an out of breath this is not normal for me..I also told him I thought that was the same meds I tried before an it gave me heart burn but he insisted I try it. I also love VSL 3 this in the past has help keep my pouchitis under control an he said that VSL doesn't have anything to do with keeping pouchitis under control its just a probiotic. Can someone please give me feed back on these issues I have. HELP!!!! it has not been a good week with all this medicine change!!!!Am I the only one who takes daily tylonel 3 to slow my bowel down????????

CTBarrister, yes I have tried bentyl an I can't remember what the issue was with that I think it made me feel really bloated/gas but it has been so long I can't remember I tell you all the money spend on trying all these meds that don't work sucks...but what are ya gonna do....thanks for your feedback I haven't heard of the others that you mentioned.

My GP prescribed a cholesterol medicine for me because the side effects are constipation (which I don't get of course). I take 2 a day (normal dosage is 6). (I don't have high cholesterol; the medicine is Welchol; I used to take Colestid--whatever my insurance will cover).

I also take Ranitidine [generic for Zantac] (1 in the morning) to decrease the acid in my body and Prelief (over the counter) before I eat certain foods to take acids out of them so things I eat and drink won't burn so much.

And of course, Immodium or generic as needed.

I wonder if I should ask about those other drugs you people mentioned. Thank you for bringing them up. I'm not sure I want to take a cholesterol medicine if I don't have to.

Lomotil is good. Some people only get relief with it, but it is prescription only and it can cause side effects in susceptible people. It works exactly the same way as Imodium, as they are both related to opiates and work in the same pathway.

You can still try Imodium again, even though it stopped working years ago. Sometimes you can revisit drugs you assumed were useless and find them helpful now.

An example is sulfasalazine. I wound up having a colectomy after this stopped working, but I take it now for cuffitis and arthritis, so never say never.

I use Lomotil. I am a weenie so it does make me drowsy (most meds do) but I've found this to be most effective. Immodium didn't help me as it has others. If I've eaten something i know will keep me up at night, I'll take it about an hour before bed. My mom has a spastic colon and can take it without any of the side effect of sleepiness. Hope this helps.

Back again guys,

Since my last visit here about medication, since then my new doctor since we've moved to Atlanta has changed up my medication an has given me lomotil which is bloating me really bad looks like I'm pregnant an it makes me feel loopy my stomach gurgles more an it feels as though the food is not digesting feels like its in my throat per se so I don't know what's going on. He also said why were you taking vsl#3 an tells me I should be on a drug to keep me in remission so he prescribes Asacol, which made my heart feel like it was going crazy smh any info on this please give your advice experience etc.

I think you need to find another Dr if this Dr isn't listening to what was working so well for you they should be prescribing you the same thing. It doesn't make sense if something was working to change it that is the whole purpose of changing meds to find the one that works. I don't understand the asacol at all my Dr said I would never need that again because it was specifically for colitis which obviously you don't have anymore. I just started VSL#3 and it works great and is made for people like us. I would honestly look at some new drs because it really doesn't seem like this Dr has your best interest in mind.
