Tom,
I definitely wouldn't add a bulking agent like fiber at this point, since the last thing you want to do is thicken the stool more. What you need to do is sip grape or prune juice every half hour or so. Just take a few sips at a time, because drinking too much can cause the opposite problem. It should help loosen things up for you so you are not straining.

i really appreciate that spooky. i hear bananas are great for either constipation or diarrhea. is this a good or bad idea with my situation?
Bananas are for diarrhea, they thicken stool. But, they are very nutritious and considered a perfect food if your diet is very limited.
If you eat them, make sure to drink lots of fluid.

You may want to skip bananas for now. At least for me, they really tend to thicken things up, and again that is not something you want at this point in time. As I said earlier I would start with the grape and prune juice, a few sips about every 30 minutes until you are not straining and/or you achieve the consistency you want. If you still find you are backed up, drink a little more, maybe a third of a glass. But don't guzzle it because you could cause the opposite problem.

i really miss my colon. this has been so hard and even after being diagnosed with cuffitis and pouchitis and getting treatment for them im still struggling so hard to just get out of bed. since the cypro constipation ive stopped my imodium and now i struggle to go and when i finally get off the can after an hour of moaning in pain i spasm non stop til i cant bear it anymore and go back for another hour. this j-pouch decision has made my miserable life now unbearable at least for now 13 weeks out...

how bout some food suggestion for this cypro concrete i have going on. im so used to slowing foods i dont know what to add. im waiting on my grape juice cause were snowed in right now and im limited on food items.
Try prune juice and/or actual prunes.
Cipro will thicken the stool and if you are taking imodium or anti-spasmodics you need to go off them. No slowers like that should be taken.

I second the prunes. Works like a charm when I have that problem.

in the past prunes or its juice have made things almost violent but ill give it a try...
Maybe you can try a little bit? At some point you have to use common sense and figure out what works and what doesn't in your case. Basically every question you put up on the board is trial and error in every case and when people put up suggestions you are rejecting them. If so you need to experiment on your own and find out what works and what doesn't. I have spent 20 years doing this and was doing it long before I was ever on this board.
Going off the imodium may not be noticed for a while, if you just went off it. I am extremely sensitive to imodium and if I take too much I am backed up for a few days.

Tom,
I concur with most advise above - take the Cipro and no other bulking agents. Let the Cipro work, and you will see what you think you can or can't add in your diet. Not too much of anything. And take it slow. Maybe this is the beginning of the end of some of your misery. I hope you feel better soon.
More than snowed-in here in Montreal. It's unbelievable and it's snowing again today.

Tom,
I am very sorry if my post offended you. The simple point I was trying to make is that many of your questions are answered by a trial and error process that you may need to figure out on your own once you get a suggestion here. Many people new to this process are looking for simple answers and universally applicable answers and they may not exist. When two people answer your question and say prune juice and you say you had a violent reaction that tells me maybe you need to try a little. You may have chugged 20 ounces, I do not know. Prunes work for some of us and they may not for you depending on what you did or took which we do not know. You do not seem to understand yet but it is like this on almost everything you are asking. You find out what works through trial and error and I have been doing so for 20 years. But, these suggestions may help you if you apply them using common sense. It may take that and lots of fine tuning. Good luck.
