Hi,

I have reached the 1 year point since my takedown surgery and am still struggling. I have found that the only thing that helps is Cipro and Flagyl. Initially I tried taking it twice a day every day for 2 weeks and everything was great at that time. Since then I have done a few more of those regimens and am now taking it once a day every 4 days. I feel like I am starting to build up antibodies to it as it is not as effective anymore.

I recently went for a scope about 2 months ago and the Dr. said that were was mild cuffitis but everything else looked good. She prescribed Salofalk suppositories which I have taken every night but they have not done much.

My big issue is consistency and number of movements. I find that the cipro/flagyl does a great job at providing bulk and greatly reducing the frequency.

Any suggestions on what this may be or where to go from here. I am also taking lomotil twice a day but I don't really think it does too much.

Thanks

Have you tried anucort suppositories? They may help. I fall into the sane category that you in at this time and three years later I am on and off cipro for cuffitis relief. You may find over time you can go longer periods without the antibiotic with relief of symptoms or possibly your symptoms may die out. Pulsing antibiotics as you are doing or alternating can help with resistance. I can go about 5 weeks or longer off them now before symptoms get out of control. It is not the optimal situation but it is better than it was a year ago. Hopefully you will be abke to get to the point of no longer needing antibiotics as I know for those of us on them long term, that is often the goal.

What are you taking the Antibiotics for?

Cuffitis isn't treated with antibiotics. I believe jeanne has problems in her cuff other than regular cuffitis. Is that right jeanne - erosion or something like that?

They treat pouchitis, IPS, c.diff and I don't know what else with antibiotics. Do you need the antibiotics?

C.diff isn't treated with Cipro and can be caused by Cipro, as happened to me when I had my colon. I can't take Cipro because of that.

Cuffitis, Pouchitis, IPS, and c.diff all have similar symptoms as they cause more and watery BM's plus pain. Cuffitis causes burning pain inside at the back door sometimes accompanied by blood. We can have several of these problems at the same time which makes it difficult to figure out what is wrong. It's just a giant pain in the <fill in the blank>

I don't know what Salofak suppositories are but I use Canasa with the ingredient of Mesalamine. Mesalamine is the same thing that is in Asacol, which I took orally for UC and the suppository places the medication directly on the affected area. Anucort is Hydrocortizone suppositories which also work well for some.

For bulking why don't you try Metamucil? You can also slow your system down, which antibiotics do, by taking more lomotil. I think you can take up to 8 a day. I take up to 8 Loperamide, which is prescription Imodium, daily. I'd suggest adding one at a time to see how it affects your stool. Ask your doctor.

There's always the way of slowing things down with certain foods too.
