Hello, I’m in a bit of a pickle here.. I’m traveling and for the las 48 hours I felt an increase on my bowel movements, more gas, feeling like I wasn’t emptying fully (and straining because of this although I try not to because I think it can lead to more issues, I rather go more times than strain).
And today I saw a little bit of blood on a couple of my bowel movements. it stopped now it seems.

I’m a bit paranoid that it could be cuffitis because my rectum was in really bad shape when they removed it. I’m about 4 months post takedown. My recovery has been amazing. I eat what I want, I’ve drank tons on wine, diet varies how many times I go but I usually  can sleep through the night and haven’t had pain/blockages/pouchitis or any issues, my doctors were super happy.
but now ive been traveling with my partner for about a month I’m on the other side of the world and had this symptoms made me super paranoid, I’m not on the best place to go to a clinic.

I will be more careful with diet and that on the next days see if it calms down but I’d like some input if anyone is feeling like either calming my nervs or advice me to go to a clinic and see a GI just in case (can cuffitis escalate badly if you don’t treat it?)

thank you

Although this could be cuffitis that wouldn’t be my first guess. The blood could easily be from the straining, leading to hemorrhoids, leading to bleeding. The easiest thing to do right away would be to try a more conservative diet, as you are planning, and see what happens. Adding some probiotic-rich food, like Greek yogurt, might also help (if that’s available). I don’t think you’re likely to be in any immediate danger - you’d get plenty more warning, including pain, if cuffitis were escalating seriously.

This could also be pouchitis, which is pretty easy to treat if moderating your diet doesn’t work. Your doctor might be available for a video visit from anywhere in the world, and in some places Cipro is available over the counter. Good luck!

I would definitely say not to drink wine or alcohol at all. BUT if you really do not want to get rid of it full-time, I would definitely say to lay off it  for a while.

Definitely agree with Greek Yogurt, its Buy One get One Free at Publix this week

Drink lots of Water too

Your not taking NSAIDS are you???

Sounds like you could be starting with pouchitis, the bleeding could also be from a hemorrhoid  triggered from your increased trips to the bathroom.  When I get these symptoms I cut down on what I eat, especially junk food and avoid alcohol.  I also make sure I take probiotics.  Worth checking in with your doc to get their thoughts, since your surgery is still pretty new.

Hello! thanks for the reply.
As a matter of fact I had to take some NSAIDS around those days that that happened, I avoid them but I couldn't, I had a migraine, you think it could be related?

I wasn't drinking alcohol during those days, which is funny because I have many days in the past and I was fine.

I did eat lots of greek yogurt and water and things got better. The bleeding was only on a couple of bathroom trips and never again.

I kinda slipped out of the diet during the weekend but I will try and take it easy this week also and stay with the recommendations

Thanks for the replies! I am better now, it was just a couple of days, I think greek yogurt did help, I will add it more to my regular diet from now on.
I dont think its pouchitis, or cuffitis now, maybe very mild pouchitis but I don't know if it just goes away by itself like this (?)

I think it may have been a bad combination of food and pain killers I had to take, and the blood was just from straining a bit and increased bathroom trips.

You are welcome my dear! And yeah definitely! NSAIDS can cause pouchitis unfortunately and it can irritate the pouch. Many doctors recommend we do not take it as a J-poucher. I take it anyway (OOPS LOL) NSAIDS are the only thing that works for my period cramps unfortunately. I know I need to look at other options though. In the past when I took NSAIDS, it made my pouch bleed a lot too. I take NSAIDS with a meal now or with food and I have not seen any blood since I have been doing that. I would still recommend not to take NSAIDS though.

I am glad you were not drinking! I am happy you had lots of Greek Yogurt too, I eat that everyday without fail, that is good for IBD folks! Its on sale for Buy One Get One Free at Publix  until Thursday

Oh wow, I know how that feels tho, I suffer from headaches and cramps with my period and NSAIDS are sometimes the only choice, I didn't know it could be so bad for the pouch, drs always say try not to take NSAIDs but don't specify why. Thanks for the input and will definitely add the yogurt to my daily diet!

Yeah our periods can definitely be hard lol, NSAIDS are the only thing that works for me unfortunately. Yeah, I learned about the NSAID thing from watching J-pouch videos on YOUTUBE from Doctors and reading research online. Too bad we have to do all this research instead of our doctors telling us. If you are going to continue taking NSAIDS too then try taking it with a meal to lower risks.

Sounds great about the Yogurt!!! I have been doing that for years! No problems

Your welcome for everything
