Hi everybody! I'm new here. I had my takedown about 6 months ago, and I had a scope yesterday because I've been having some rectal bleeding. My GI found some ulceration near the bottom of the pouch and the rectal cuff, but wouldn't say what it is until some biopsies come back. Sounds like it's either cuffitis or pouchitis though. I know the basics about pouchitis, but haven't been able to find out much about cuffitis. Can anyone help with what it is, the symptoms or the treatment? Thanks!

I hope to explain this correctly, as I am the mom of a j-poucher, not the patient; but, cuffitis just another way of stating that the tissue in your anus is still infected with Ulcerative Colitis. Of course there are degrees of severity, and different methods to deal with this. It can be tricky and come and go. Since this is the only area left from the infected colon that wasn't removed during the colectomy, you still deal with pain, bleeding....
The treatment can include Canasa suppositories (5-ASA), which work directly on the area involved, or anucort suppositories or enemas. My symptoms usually include watery diarrhea, increased frequency, and multiple trips to empty the pouch. Occasionally there's a general feeling of illness, fatigue and low grade fevers. I rarely have pain or bleeding.

The treatments usually work in less than a week in my experience.
