I'm writing on behalf of my husband, he had his colon removed due to UC in May 2013 and j-pouch created.  It never functioned well, had it removed and new reconstruction in December 2016, scheduled take-down on April 25th.  He's been having frequent mucous discharge and watery accidental j-pouch leakage and is feeling that if he's having this much j-pouch leakage with his ostomy, how bad will it be after his take down when his j-pouch is full of stool?  He's getting very nervous and discouraged and is thinking seriously about just scrapping the take down, have it removed, get a end ileostomy and be done with it.  He has emailed his surgeon and he wrote back saying we'll talk about it when he comes to NY for the take down surgery. He emailed the dr again and he hasn't responded.  Has anyone who had frequent leakage/drainage with ostomy had good success with j-pouch control after take-down?

Thank you

I did not have it with my first pouch, but I had a pouch redo and I had some backside leakage with my ileostomy. I was told once it was hooked up it will be better. I have been hooked up for a year now and I still get some leakage. I was told before surgery this could be a complication from the mucousectomy. I put a small pad up against the anus to help. Some days there is nothing and some days some on the pad. I have never crapped my pants though, I have tried bulking meds and diet with little success

I had lots of mucus/leaks before my take down, and I was scared to death that I would poop my pants and have lots of leaks.  I am 3 weeks post take down and have not an issue at all with anything leaking out or pooping the bed.  I prepared myself for the worst and have been presently surprised at how well everything is working.  Good luck to your husband with what ever he decides.

Before my take down, I didn't have much leakage. Now three months post take down, I rarely have any leakage. Sometimes I have to rush to the bathroom, but I always make it in time. In the beginning, I had a lot of leakage and had to change clothes a lot. I used to leak through to the bed by the way.It would help to have pads for the bed or adult diapers if it gets bad enough. I think your husband will be okay, especially once the j pouch matures.
