If you are considering k pouch surgery you would need to contact professor mortenson directly at the Churchill hospital, colorectal unit in oxford. I was lucky to have medical insurance to fund my surgery so this is the private route so to speak. If you are trying the nhs route, you would need a refferal from your GP to begin the process. The good news I am led to believe that prof mortensons fellow who is called Richard love grove is being trained up for this type of surgery to carry on the good work in the future. I hope that answers the queries I have been asked.

My GP wont reffer me! He said its not that simple as it costs alot of money also he wont because...

why is the surgery so rare?
If it was a good option for people with stomas then loads of hospitals would do it ect!!

He said it sounds "fishy" to him!

Someone has told me I can pay for a private appointment to see Prof Mortensen then he might be able to switch me to nhs if he wanted to do the surgery?
Hi Roxycan.I presume that you have a stoma ??? and in my opinion all of the products necessary to maintain this from bags to paste to adhesive remover (£17 a tin !!!!) etc etc is a vast amount for the NHS to fund. I have read that there was a study covering a 3 year period which concluded that you would reach a "break even point" on costings funding the k pouch op.Aswell as the obvious benefits of this procedure giving you a lifechange. I simply cannot believe such an arrogant GP !!!!!!! I am 20 days post op and feeling very well. If you have to pay for a consultation Prof Mortensons secretary is called Emma and her number is 07789 827658 this is a business not a private mobile number. I paid for a consultation and it was £150.00 so at least you know roughly the cost of that. You can also try contacting Graham Wilson at the Royal edingburgh hospital the only other place currently to perform K poch surgery , this maybe nearer to you. I wish you the best of luck. Let us know how you get on. Kind regards Richard.
Thanks Richard, I will mention the cost savings to the Dr too.

Yes I heard £150, im happy to pay if if its going to start things off. I dont want to live with a stoma when there is another option Frowner

I would rather be seen at Oxford (just heard more infomation about it and good things about the surgeon)

One question though, say I get the K pouch and something goes wrong, I live 5 hours away from Oxford, what do you do?
The way it was explained to me was, That any minor problems such as fisulas, intesternal blockages etc ( which you would be unlucky if you suffer from any of these )should and could be treated by your local hospitals, More serious conditions where specialist treatment was needed your local health authority has a duty of care to transport and pay for any treatment needed, Basically they would ship you off to oxford for treatment.I have had conversation with a health care professional, where I was lead to believe that there has been two eastern Europeans who have had revision work completed in oxford so someone who lives only 5 hours away should't be a problem. Regards Richard.
