Hey,

I am hoping to find someone in this forum with j-pouch who trains competitively for their sport. In my case, it is running. I understand there may be some people out there who runs for pleasure, staying in shape and other various reasons. However, I am looking for testimonies of athletes who take their training just a tad bit further. Please don't this as an insult. I've been robbed of going to Deaf World Athletic Championship and Deaflympics due to UC. So now I would like to train for the next one, but I'm unsure if this is a good idea.

I understand that hydration will be the key factor here and that plain water won't just do it. I've also learned that if I drink gatorade, it kind of makes me go. What are some of the suggestions you folks have in store for me?

Thank you all.

I do the warrior dashes and super hero scrambles. It's not a 'marathon' but it's a serious race just the same. Marathons are too much for me and just running, I like the courses and crawling through mud, climbing over walls, monkey bars over a mud pit, so on. You may like those if you like marathons or anything of the sort. They're pretty fun.

I honestly don't do anything different during the race, other than the usual things you need to do as a human being. I use prework outs like Jacked 3D and 1MR just like anyone else, I use amino acids in my coffee every morning, and I drink water. I dont usually drink the sports drinks at all unless I need the sugar. I do just fine.

I train like an animal all the time, for pleasure and for these. I'm in the gym 5 - 6 days a week at 5am. Weight train, circuts and some pretty intense cardio. I honestly don't have any restrictions because of my pouch. I know everyone is different but that's my experience.
I have ran 3 half marathons and a bunch of 5Ks with an ileostomy.. and finished in pretty good positions.
Biggest thing I can tell you about hydration and nutrition is its a full time job! You must work on being hydrated 24hours a day whether its a race day, a training day, or just a rest day. For me plain water and gatoraide are absolutely out of the question. I use a true WHO oral rehydratiion solution from Jianas Brothers. I mix it with a crystal light. Thats is all I drink anytime of the day - breakfast, snacks, when training.. that is truly all I drink. I also focused heavily on eating lots of protein - but things that would also "slow the gut". Peanut butter, etc.. Luna bars work well for me. I found I had to eat much more frequently than others I was training with. I avoid most all of the sports focused nutrition and hydration things because most have so much sugar... not good for us "colon- free" people.

Also the other thing that has been effective for me is something my running coach told me "never ever do anything on race day that you haven't done before". So it requires a lot of planning for nutrition and hydration in long runs, but it can be done. absolutely.

so go for it. start slowly. and figure out what works for you in terms of nutrition and hydration.
good luck.
I have done many half marathons and one full marathon. Numerous triathlons and can say it Is definately a learning experience. I have found that I really like a product called nuun. Its a tablet that you spike your water with which has electrolytes. That and gu work the best for me. I learned a lot about nutrition from another jpoucher who is a multi iron man. email me at tombcodyb@hotmail.com if you want to chat. Good luck to all of you
