INTRODUCTION:

Restorative proctocolectomy (RPC) and ileal pouch-anal anastomosis (IPAA) is the surgical treatment of choice for patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) or familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) who require colectomy. The reconstructive nature of RPC and IPAA requires intensive preoperative care, teamwork, and surgical skills and expertise.  While the surgery significantly improves patients’ quality of life, adverse sequelae or complications are common. The diagnosis and management of ileal pouch disorders have been challenging. Experts from CUMC/NYP (Drs. Bo Shen, Ravi P. Kiran, and James Church) led the effort to establish the International Ileal Pouch Consortium (IIPC) to meet the diagnostic and therapeutic challenges
