Jpoucher here comming up on 13 years Oct 15th 2014.

Have Colonoscopy of j-pouch scheduled for then, they will go up the length of the ileum after entering the rectal stump/rectum/pouch.

Ordered to drink/mix 32 oz of miralax with gatorade and start drinking at 5pm. Also prescribed biscodyl/dulcolax 5mg tablets (4) to be taken in conjuction with the miralax.

Questions are as follows :

1) I am fasting now as i type, 2 days in advance of my scope, its 11:00am as i write now est on tuesday, october 7th, if i continue to fast with my pouch and only drink mt dew, gatorade, etc and anything of the clear variety and ONLY take the 4 biscodyl tablets prescribed and AVOID the miralax in total will my rectum/entire ileum length/pouch be free of stool/poop for a 9-9;30am colonoscopy or 10am (im actually having an upper endoscopy first then the colonoscopy). or is there not a way to get around doing the miralax and i must w/ the 4, 5 mg biscodyl tablets prescribed? im really stressing as always over the over kill prep prescribed and can never stomach drinking any liquid prep for lower scopes.

2) i have left over osmo prep from 8/2012 expiration if i have 3 doses of it roughly and i take it with or without the biscodyl (4) 5 mg tablets will that be enough to clean my rectum and ileum of stool/poop?

im really stressing over this, as a veteren poucher who has had countless amts of colonoscopies, and as an fap'er that my ileum/anal canal/rectum wont be properly cleaned if i dont do the miralax. Keeping in mind i chose to do it my way and not eat from now just do liquids then the 4 biscodyl 5mg tablets.

THoughts, inputs? words of wisdom anyone, Jan? can i get away with no miralax and just take the (4) 5mg biscodyl tablets as written on instructions at 4pm the evening before the exam/scope, october 8th?

please let me know. as i cannot tolerate and have bad/horrible gag reflux on anything that is drinking involved bowel prep solution wise. i will be sick and vomit over kitchen/bathroom sink.

i have never tried mom (milk of magnesia) nor will i do mag citrate, anything to drink laxative wise i will regurgitate.! no dr seems to care g.i wise that i cannot drink the prep and vomit water from my mouth and clear water pours thru my pouch.

for reference im a bearish man, i am 5 feet 6 and 235-240 lbs if the weight thing/tummy holds any barrier to prep/how it works versus not eating.

thanks in advance, all thoughts and comments please post between now and when im scheduled on oct 9th 2014!

The big, involved preps are designed for those with an intact GI system, specifically, a colon and rectum.

Call the office and ask for specific instructions from the doctor who will be performing your exams. Stress the fact that you have NO colon at all. The receptionist and advice folks just parrot the standard prep and admonish you against any deviation.

I just go with clear liquids the day before and tap water enemas until clear before leaving the house. Sometimes I'll do half a bottle of magnesium citrate. My GI now just tells his staff "patient knows prep" so we don't have conflicting instructions.

In addition to Jan's good advice: as far as I know there's simply no way to pass a scope "the length of the ileum." The ileum is over seven feet long. They can push the sigmoidoscope (not a colonoscope) into the ileum and have a look around and they may have reasons to press the limits. In any case, I suggest you look over some old posts here about preps for pouchoscopy. Yours seems like more than is necessary.

hi Jan,

in addition to prior fasting, will 4 dulcolax/biscodyl tablets clean my rectum and ileium of fecal matter for oct 9th? the in structions say to take 4pm oct 8th the 4 biscodyl pills then start miralax at 6pm.

my question was specfically if i can just go with the 4 dulcolax pills, and fast as i am doing now until morning colonoscopy oct 9th and it sthe 7th now and will i be "cleaned out" for the morning of thursday, 9th oct that the colonoscopy wont be postponed? plus i always have polypectomies and biopsies since i have Familal polyposis.

thanks again for your feedback/answer(s).

I really don't know Len. That is why I suggest you contact the doctor. The fact that you always have polypectomies is not really a factor. The ducolax don't really purge (clean out). They just get the gut moving. There always will be some bile coming through and they just rinse it away through the scope.

What prep have you done in the past? I would just go with what you know works.

Jan,

Osmo prep. I have one full dose that just expired left, the bottle says 8/2014 expiration.

I was wondering if i could take that one dose and the 4 biscodyl tablets and be cleaned out enough for the scope.

my gag reflex is terrible, i cannot drink miralax mixed with anything, be it gatorade or power ade even!

i called the nurse of the dr doing the scope on the 9th. I left a message stating i had a jpouch and wondered if there is any way to get around not doing miralax all together. Just asked if i could take the 4 dulcolax at 4pm on oct 8th , the day before and one dose or whatever is left of the osmo prep that just expired and be clean enough.

im so sick of this. it suppose to be easier after colon removal to prep for a scope, not just as bad as when you have your colon intact.

sigh...

i think if im fasting and not having roughage and pushing liquids 2 days prior, already have a J and just take dulcolax and some osmo id be fine and cleaned out enough. i have buile comming out now, yellowish water little bit of brown stool (havent eaten all day today and its 1pm est) and will take dulcolax as scheduled/prescribed at 4pm tommorrow Oct 8th.)
