Hi. I need a (real) friend who knows the Cleveland Ohio area for intimate advice about the place. I have a problem with my Jpouch that normal Jpouch colorectal surgeons don't see....that's probably going to require me having the whole thing redone...ug...and so I got to go to the Cleveland Clinic. The problem is that I live in Massachussets and know nothing at all about Cleveland or even Ohio. (Long story why I'm moving instead of visiting, that I'm sure you don't want me to go into)

Anyhue, I'm on disability and have a section 8 voucher and so the trick here is figuring out WHERE the best place for me is. I really don't want to live in the city but I need to be where I can get to and from the Clinic for probably multiple surgeries, on my own.....and of course I'll need specific things close to me, and really prefer to be somewhere that makes me happy.

Believe it or not, I've been looking, there's no organization that will give me just everyday information (like what's a town or what's a city, or how big a place is, or how expensive or run down an area is, etc.) that any Clevelandite would consider just stupid commonsense information that everybody knows.

I might be out of commission for as much as half a year, (if it's two surgeries) so I REALLY can't afford to make any mistakes but I'm totally flying in the dark. Is there anybody here who could help me....or know anybody who could help me.....or at least send me in the direction of an organization or an individual who'd help? I need to move soon and I feel like I'm about to make some huuuuge mistakes so I really appreciate anything I can get.

Thankyou.
Wayne.

I am on a west side suburb of Cleveland. It's about a 15-20 minute drive from my house to Clinic. I used to live in Lakewood which is right along the lake on Rt2. It's about a 20 minute drive to CCF Main campus. It's a very diverse city but well cultured and a lot to do in the downtown area. It's around a few main highways and about 5 minutes from downtown Cleveland. Any other questions feel free to ask
Thanks to both of you!! I really mean it. I've been trying so hard the last week to find ANYONE who lives in the area and the idea that you guys are dealing with the same stuff is a huuuuge added bonus. Smiler

I actually have a bunch of questions for each of you (Danielle, I don't have any doctors there yet and knowing a good doctor or two to see would help me too), but right now I got to go to work. I should be able to post again later today.....but thanks to both of you. What a relief. Smiler
Wayne,
I'm not from Cleveland but I've been more than a frequent visitor to CC for the past three years. I've probably made more than 60trips there in the past year alone, including stays in town and of course lots of stays at the hospital - just got out again 2 days ago in fact! So I can definitely help you navigating the CC system and docs. I have the best of the best docs who deal with the most problematic patient cases.

One area of town you might want to investigate is University Heights. Its not far from the clinic and I believe fairly reasonably priced. Lots of things right in that area for everyday needs. Also I would make sure that wherever you live.. that you have public bus transportation to CC. CC is very well served by public transport, so just make sure that it goes to where you are looking to live.

I'll try to help in anyway I can with your questions.
Best, Liz
Okay.....since I left this post (and a billion others on other sites) I've had a lot of responses and even a few who know the area. I've also had two or three suggestions for doctors. So my situation has evolved somewhat. Now (as far as doctors go) I have to figure out which is the doctor I should go after. But that won't happen until I finally settle down in the area so for right now I think I'm gonna' make a list.

Danielle, it's totally awesome you have the whole list of surgeries....I wish I had that. I really wish I could get my whole medical life organized. Did you have Crohns or Colitis or did you get the pouch for a different reason? I met another lady on Facebook whose got Crohns and who has had 16 surgeries, the last 3 with her last doctor at the Cleveland Clinic who she also loves.

Liz, I will definitely check out University Heights. I'm really afraid of being stuck in a place I hate though.....and I'm not really a city person. I was kind of hoping there'd be a suburb...some place away from cars where I could get some quiet and natural surroundings. It might not be in the cards but I figure it wouldn't hurt to try. I've been getting that feeling, that I should be near a bus....just from looking for places, they keep putting that as a feature of the place.

Okay....um...these are things that would make my life happy (I don't expect the perfect place but this is what I want anyway):

An area that isn't run down, that maybe has some character.
An area that isn't too expensive.
A quiet area or one that at least gets quiet.
I like trees or nature near by.
After my surgeries I'm gonna' want to exercise, so a decent gym.
A BIG bathroom, or at least decent sized.(You guys probably wouldn't know this but I figure it can't hurt to throw it in.)
I might need a laundry mat.
A Target store near by....they sell these wipes I can't get anywhere else.
A Walmart, cheap grocery store, Natural foods grocery store.
(I like hippy, artsy type people and things so)
A nice coffee house with an open mic or something to hang out in if I'm up to it.
Artsy type stores or hangouts
Chinese food.

It all seems like a tall order but I'm just brainstorming. MOSTLY what I need are opinions of where I might fit best.

After looking into whatever I could find on my own I found out about Coventry Villiage in Cleveland Heights. I found a place that sounds cool in Cleveland Heights but I don't know how big Cleveland Heights is or even whether Coventry Villiage is really how they paint themselves out to be.....as an artsy place like Greenwich Village. I also used to live in Boulder, CO. and have firsthand experience of how hippies turn into yuppies and everything gets over priced because suddenly everybody wants to live there. So I don't even know if Coventry Village is what it used to be or has gone up or down economically.

The University Heights and western suburb or Lakewood suggestions is what I'm looking for....Poucho "I used to live in Lakewood which is right along the lake on Rt2. It's about a 20 minute drive to CCF Main campus. It's a very diverse city but well cultured and a lot to do in the downtown area. It's around a few main highways and about 5 minutes from downtown Cleveland." is exactly the kind of advice I'm looking for.....So if you guys have any other suggestions or want to weigh them out with me I'm open to anything and I'm at the point where I want to consider everything. If you think I'm not being practical then nows the time for me to figure that out. I haven't decided on anything. Looking for a place is my next first step.

Thanks again guys....you don't know how much this helps.

Thanks Liz.

Do you know:

Is Cleveland Heights big?

Are there good and bad places to be in it?

Should I look for a place near Coventry Village or is it easily accessible from all over Cleveland Heights?

Is Coventry Village as cool as I'm making it out to be or is it basically just another outside mall?

How far away are they from the Clinic?

Would you rather be in University Heights which is closer, or Cleveland Heights which is greener?
