Stay away from her, seriously. You do not want to get chicken pox for the first time as an adult.

I don't think you can have the chicken pox vaccine while you're on Humira (because it's a live vaccine), but if you ever come off Humira you should be vaccinated.

Was your niece not vaccinated? It's a standard childhood vaccine nowadays.
Yes, chicken pox is highly contagious and can be serious as an adult, so do avoid her. The good news is that if you have ever been exposed to it before, you probably had it. People think you have to have the full blown disease, but sometimes it is just a minor thing that goes unnoticed, with only one pox sore that seems like a pimple.

I have no memory of chicken pox, but did not get it when my kids had it. One son had pox all over and he was miserable. The other had maybe 5 sores, none of them on exposed skin.

The shingles vaccine is also live virus, so you cannot get that either while on Humira.

Yes, stay away from her. My daughter was on steroids and 6mp and was in grammar school at the time it was going around, so the dr gave her gamma globin (they were horrible injections)to try and help her resist it. She did get a bad case of it, ended up in the hospital. Believe it or not, she got it again a year later, enough!

I myself am just getting over a severe case of shingles, sucks.

Stay away! And I hope your niece feels better soon.
Please stay very far away from her until all her spots are absolutely dry. It is highly contagious and can be deadly in those who are immunocompromised. There is a medication called zostivax that is used here in Canada for our oncology folks who may have been exposed. Please check with your physician.
If you have been exposed early in life there is no guarantee that you will not develop the disease again. Please be very careful.
Becky's mom,
I am laughing because your daughter is the only person other than myself that I know of who has had them twice!
I know that I had a mild case while hospitalised as a teen (I also only got 1 mump!) but years later, on the eve of a friend's wedding I discovered that my whole chest was covered in pox and that the bride's brother had caught them as well from my roomy's kid.
So much for the sexy, low cut dress!
Apparently you can get a 'light' case that does not develop enough anti-bodies to build immunity.
I seem to be pox-resistant now...or the grandkids weren't contagious.
They are definitly much worse when you are an adult. Break out the calamine lotion and take warm baths with camomile!

Oh boy, sorry that happened to you also.
With my daughter, her case was so severe the first time, hospitalized and on the IV med for chicken pox used in people with a compromised immune system. So the second time, a year later, when we were in Disney and she started breaking out no drs thought it could be chicken pox again because of the severity of the first time. Unfortunately it was, but this time she was on the oral meds at home.
The usual but all considering, I really cannot complain (probably because no one would listen!)
As my Rhumy said, 'if you wake up after 50 and you are not in pain somewhere, then you are not alive!'
So I'll take what I've got and not trade it for whatever anyone else has Wink
Hope that she is doing well and stays well a long, long time....
Here's to good health!
Sharon
