All week I have been suffering from a cold, with severe chest and and nasal congestion. I tried Mucinex multisymptom severe cold syrup to treat the symptoms, and it gave me a very bad diarrhea. In the past I got diarrhea from other, similar liquid multisymptom cold meds.

So I then switched to the Mucinex caps and that seemed to help, but my office manager did not like the way I sounded today, and ordered me to see a Doctor which I did late afternoon.

So I left the office, saw my PCP and she gave me a script for Guaifenisen AC Cough Syrup. From what I read online, it is a high powered codeine cough syrup which contains one agent to loosen and break up the phlegm so that it is not painful when I cough, and codeine, which suppresses the urge to cough by telling the brain to stop coughing. I suspect this will constipate me if anything so I will need to dial it back with the imodium tonight.

How do your J Pouches handle these cold meds? OK?

I am happy to report that the Guaifenisen AC Cough Syrup knocked out my painful, hacking cough and loosened up the phlegm. Probably should have gone to the Doctor two days earlier and spared myself some suffering. Also, the cough syrup seems to have an imodium-like effect on my bowels, so I am actually getting 3 benefits from taking it, codeine to knock out cough and dial back the bowels, and Guaifenisen to loosen and dissipate the phlegm. It is getting the job done and fills Jan's criteria of being specifically targeted at the symptoms.
