hi reading your thread about giving diet a shot..yeh for you!!!!..but i want to be sure when you say low carb,low sugar diet you mean eliminate certain carbs( all grains,starchy carbs,pasta in total and all sugar(except fruit or honey.. ..i do not believe you can have a chance to make it work otherwise..your body if affected by bad bacteria overgrowth will use the foods whatever the amount to defeat your purpose..so i hope that is what you plan to do..if it helps and if you find you might also want to decrease your output you might want to try my second recommendation of imodium..combo has gotten me off of long term rotating of antibiotics so far 4 months and hopefully counting..wishing you luck!!

I just saw this thread so please excuse my delayed response.
To answer your question I have eliminated from my diet cereals, grains, starchy carbs, pasta and breads and sugars. My typical daily diet is 2 scrambled eggs and natural chicken sausage for breakfast, an apple sliced with natural peanut butter and edamame from the shell for lunch, and chicken or fish and a salad for dinner. In the dinner salad I will use a natural lowfat low sugar dressing and sprinkle in some chopped walnuts or pecans. I am generally buying salad dressings at natural food stores and do most of my grocery shopping there. The only processed food I am eating is the chicken sausages and they are minimally processed.
I do have small servings of fruit with breakfast and dinner, usually pineapple, mango, and papaya, and an apple every day for lunch.
Occasionally my job calls for me to eat out with clients, colleagues and others. Invariably I choose a restaurant that makes a good entree salad. I do not get any bread with it, just grilled chicken or shrimp or scallops.
Regarding imodium I take it but I am very sensitive to it. I am still on some low doses of antibiotics and I need the imodium more when I am on a no-antibiotic week. I can go a week without antibiotics but then need to take a low dose of them for a week to prevent deterioration. During these weeks I take lactulose and the lactulose's laxative effects are nicely offset by an imodium or two here and there. I need less of the imodium when I am not taking the lactulose. I am very careful with lactulose and imodium. With lactulose one teaspoon 3x daily which is offset by one or two imodiums. If I take cipro and flagyl one week I barely need the imodium due to the stool thickening propensities of those antibiotics.
By the way I gave up honey. In my heyday I would consume a 40 ounce bottle every two weeks, most of that being used to sweeten tea. I love honey but there is just too much sugar in it. The only sugar I consume is what is naturally occurring in fresh apples, pineapple, mango, papaya.
I seem to be doing well with it but I still have not gotten off antibiotics totally. I am on very low dosages but not off yet.

sounds like you are making progress and like me still have to tweak it more since last i wrote i too had to go back on a low dosage antibiotic ..probably eating to much of some things i suspect..like my beloved fruit and maybe honey ..i have been on a low dosage antibiotic for a week because i had to go away and needed to stay more consistent..this week will attempt to go off again..
it was amazing that i went 4 months very well without antibiotics but i either built up bacteria or something after that time and started having off days..i am beginning to think the diet has to be so exact everyday,and finding that "exact is the issue"..

I cured my pouchitis with resistant starch and psyllium powder. 2 tbs RS, 1 tbs psyllium 3 times per day. 2 weeks later i've not felt so good. 4 bms per day, 1 at night. No pain. Hallowed ground. Manage intestinal ecology.
I had great results with resistant starch. I got up to 4 T of Bob Mill potato starch. Then I stopped cause I read that long term is not good. But I'm still doing ok. I try and eat food high in the starch and eat 24 hour yogurt and homemade kefir for probiotics. I can't take physillium but I can use gummy fiber.
What is resistant starch and what is the thinking/science behind it's use. I would think it would be like other 'starchy carbohydrates' and might make things worse. Please educate me. Thanks so much.
hi best to just look it upon internet..just did myself and one guide to resistant starches pretty much outlined it very well..as to my issues..sibo ..it appears it is still not been shown that resistance starches flush out bad bacteria..and deepening can give pone with compromised gut bloating,gas,cramping ..but some people have indicated some success with it..
I have tried to get a better understanding I have looked it up and am no further ahead. Is someone able to provide a link that helps explain it in relation to the j pouch? I have found academic papers which just baffle me (http://edepot.wur.nl/49267) and other sites that seem to be more about blood glucose and diabetes. As you can likely tell, I'm feeling frustrated. It's exacerbated by feeling increased bowel urges and cramping this morning. I don't know what to eat and what not to eat. Thanks for your help.
i cannot help s to the resistant starches..when i emailed dr. shen he said it was just a theory for now..
for starters however a lot of us have had some good results with scd..diet..check that out..remove all starchy carbs and sugar not natural as fruit..pretty much all protein good..meats poultry ,fish eggs..veggies are good..fats such as olive oil,fruits,certain hard cheeses like cheddar,swiss..home made yoghurt..very easy to make..yoghurt maker can be ordered from lucys kitchen as well a yoghurt starter,nuts,including almond butter..if you look up diet or get the book ..on amazone..stopping the vicious cycle ..by elaine gottshell you get full list of foods you can or cannot eat..
