Guess what... I've got C. diff!

I went to my GI last week for a pouchoscope because I've been having liquid BMs for a few weeks since I had the flu in early January. She diagnosed mild pouchitis but said it was so mild that she thought I could clear it up with cholestyramine, Culturelle, and low carb diet.

I've been doing all three with minimal success (the cholestyramine seemed to help a little bit, but not enough) and found out today that the sample from the scope came back positive for C. diff.

My GI's rx is 250 mg vancoymcin four times per day for 14 days, Florastor twice per day, and Culturelle once per day (probiotics continue for at least a month). My GI said the cholestyramine would help too, but I don't think I can take it when I am taking the vanco every six hours, since the cholestyramine says it has to be taken 3-4 hours away from other meds.

Does this sound standard/good compared to what others have been through? Do you have any other tips/stuff to keep in mind about getting over C. diff? Can C. diff cause pouchitis or does this mean I have both at the same time...?

I was treated with flagyl for c diff (had j pouch as well at time) and it cleared it up and I never got it again. I think vanco is even stronger than flagyl so hopefully it will knock it right out. Not sure how I got it either--I had giardia at the same time (I know I got that while travelling in China)--flagyl worked on both of them. Good luck and I hope it is just a one time thing.
