I am post surgery wk 5 from take down of ostomy. The J pouch is very new to me and boy have I had butt burn. I am needing tips on how to help it? Will it ever go away? What creams work? I have gone to a basic bland diet to try and prevent it as much as possible but I am also not perfect. Just looking for any advice anyone can give me!

Hi Tania,

I am 6 months out and I can tell you its gonna get better. But it's still a rough road. I am now at 4 good days, 3 bad days on average per week.

Best advice I can give you is to stock up on "Ilex Paste". Amazon sells it. That is the only barrier cream that I have found to work for me. YMMV but I tried pretty much everything that is supposed to help with Butt Burn. But Ilex is different, it's like a latex seal for your skin.

Good luck,

 Toddi.

Tania,

i agree that Ilex paste is the best ever to prevent butt burn! I order direct from the manufacturer in US- I order a jar for home, and tubes to carry with me. Initially, I used it ever time I went to bathroom, cleaned myself with Vaseline and then a cosmetic pad, and reapply. Ise generously if I am leaving house, and it almost make a plug. Crazy- I know, but it does seal leakage. At home I use lighter coat just to protect skin, and once your healed you won't need every time, though if I indulge in spicy or acidic food I use it more often. Bland diet will help initially and like others have said time will also help. Hard to be patient, but it does take months not weeks for body to adjust. Good luck in your recuperation! Laurie
