Yes, it does go away! Mine felt like a red hot poker up the backside, nasty. I have extremely acidic output so I take a 1/2 dose of Questran twice a day to neutralize the acids. After experimenting a bit I found Balneol liquid cleanser worked better than moist wipes or a bidet at cleaning, soothing and moisturizing the painful areas. Walgreens carries it next to the Preparation H. My surgeon also had me put the Calmoseptine on a small gauze pad and leave it on the effected
area. It seemed to work better and be much less messy than spreading it myself.
I stuck to a low residue diet for the first month. Every time I ventured onto a real food diet I was back to having butt burn. I am on my fifth week and already able to eat most normal foods.
The next few weeks might be a roller coaster
of ups and downs. It takes a while to figure out what is best for your body. Be patient and come here often for lots of great support.
Butt burn is common. I found the time period between 3 to 6 months after surgery to be the most difficult. Everyone likes different types of creams. I prefer baby ointment with zinc oxide.
Apply lotion BEFORE using the bathroom. And I agree with the last post, you have to apply a little bit inside. Use wet wipes and pat your bottom. Don't rub! And reapply lotion. I remember soaking in tub but it felt like a million needles!!! The skin will toughen. Best wishes.
I am almost 4 months post takedown and I use Calmoseptine on a regular basis just to be on the safe side. I do have a bidet and that helps out so much. I honestly don't know how I would be even be comfortable without it. I use a handheld portable one at work I got free with mine. I have seen them at Costco for 199.00 with a 50.0 rebate now. I paid alot more for mine but this seems like a really good deal. And just keeping the area cleaned after each BM will help out so much even if you have to use a squirt bottle of warm water. The important thing is to get the stool off of your skin asap! Good luck!
Thank you all for the advice. Smiler I always use one of those peri squirt bottles to clean the area with warm water. I'm thinking I should probably just go get a bidet like everyone raves about.

Holly M - what kind of bidet do you have? We don't belong to Costco so I'm thinking of maybe getting a Coco. ?

But will this eventually go away? I'm not really crazy about a lifetime of cream down there.

Thanks!!
I bought the Coco bidet seat with remote controls. I did not find out the dryer was infrared waves until after it was installed. The last thing I need is more exposure to cancer causing rays in that area. I seem to be too sensitive for it. Even on the most gentle setting the water wash can hurt when I have butt burn. It is also really hard to keep pristine. There are tiny crevices on the underside of the seat that are hard to clean without a small brush. The Balneol works better and it is cheaper!
Don't forget this week and next week is when you are at the highest risk for butt burn. After that the risk quickly decreases as your pouch matures.
I agree with the post of JoannaB70, it lasts for a period of months in the 1st year after takedown. After about the 9-12 month mark it gradually faded away and then never really had butt burn again.

I can put half a cup of Frank's red hot sauce on my food and not have any butt burn. If I did this at the 6 month mark it would have been torture.

I would try a sitz bath to soothe your ass every now and then when you get sick of the calmoseptine.
Also, if you have problems with leakage, which you may not even be aware of, you will get the burn. In most cases, the leakage will let up or disappear as everything adjusts down there. I have other issues, unfortunately, and still experience the burn from time to time (19+ years out). Sigh.

I've found keeping barrier cream on at night does the trick (my leakage is mainly at night). What has really helped has been patting some stomahesive protective powder on prior to the paste. And as others have mentioned - the bidet!

Just be sure to keep the area protected for the next couple months, at all times - things will improve.

DJB, it really will come back again?

I had it for a period of months and it gradually faded away. Some have it shorter, some longer, and a few chronically, but I think the average is probably what is stated in the post of JoannaB70. I think mine lingered a bit longer but at one point I would only get butt burn with certain foods, and then eventually I could eat anything with no butt burn.

Many of the new Pouchers seem very impatient to get through these issues and want instant results, but you just have to let Mother Nature take its course. Your body has to adapt to the Pouch and vice versa and eventually the alkalinity/acidity levels get adjusted properly. Until that happens your butt is going to be sore.
