I am getting close now - under 4 weeks until the baby comes!

I am now worrying about Breastfeeding. I have antibiotic dependent pouchitis and cannot go off antibiotics at all - I am even struggling to stay well on them. I am worried about hurting the baby - has anyone successfully Breastfed long term on continuous antibiotics?

Thanks. An excited Clicky!

Clicky, I was able to nurse for almost 6 months on Augmentin. I was on it for my entire pregnancy plus 6 months. Around 4 months after my son was born, the Augmentin really started losing effectiveness. I started a course of Cipro and pumped/dumped for 7 days (so sad to wash all that milk down the drain!). I had built up a milk supply to use during this time and also supplemented with formula. Then I resumed nursing a couple days after I finished my meds. When my son was 6 months old, the Augmentin had basically stopped working and I knew I needed to start back on my antibiotic rotation. I decided to quit nursing at that point and switched him over to formula. But I was very thankful for the 6 months I got to do it!

Thank you for your reply I really appreciate it! I am thrilled to hear that you managed for 6 months with minimal pumping and dumping and the wee one was OK - I was worried it might cause diarrhea in the baby. I prefer most of the time Augmentin with a rotation of Keflex. My docs took me off Augmentin for the third trimester and I have been pretty sick - the Keflex doesn't work very well and right now I am on Azythromycin which is also not great so thank goodness I can get back on the Augmentin in a week or two when the wee man is here!

Clicky, I was wondering why you can't be on the Augmentin now if you are suffering? Are you docs recommending against it for the baby? I was on a pretty low dose for my first two trimesters when my digestion was slowed (only 1/2 a pill once a day). Then I went to 500mg once a day when my frequency picked up.

FYI...my little guy never had any adverse effects (that I am aware of) from the antibiotics. No issues with diarrhea at all.

That is great that there were no adverse effects on your baby! I am so pleased to hear that! Apparently there is concern that the Augmentin can lead to necrotizing enterocolitis in the baby if taken in the third trimester (which is the case with other antibiotics too -but this one is very wide spectrum). I take 500mg x2 per day. I have been tempted to take it I get pretty desperate and the risk is low but it looks like they are going to move up my c-section day so I am trying to hang on....

Thanks again for your support!

Hi Ladies

There is so much conflicting advice about antibiotics isnt there?!

I am on 375mg Augmentin three times a day so similar does to you Clicky. I am now 21 weeks pregnant and have been on this maintenance dose for 24 weeks due to horrendous fistulas. If I didnt take the Augmentin I would struggle to even sit down!

I asked my Obstetrician at my appointment yesterday about breastfeeding and he confirmed that it would be fine to continue to the Augmentin. I now share your concern about baby getting a runny tum but I suppose it is a wait and see thing.

I am concerned about what is mentioned regarding AUgmentin stopping working after a while. Does it's effect come back successfully if you have a break from it and rotate antibiotics and then return to Augmentin at a later date? I ask this as I would need to go back on Augmentin if we decide to have a second baby.

Best of luck for the birth Clicky. I bet you must be so excited to see your little baby soon!
