Hi all,

So I had my beautiful boy, delivered safe and healthy,
by emergency c-section on 5 May. He is now nearly 6 weeks old and breastfeeding is going well.

I have been on a long term dose of maintenance Augmentin for the whole pregnancy to date due to fistulae. I checked previously with the obstetrician about breastfeeding and they said this was safe.

Albert has had severe, and I mean severe, nappy rash most of the time for his whole 6 weeks. Every time we mentioned it or showed a midwife or health visitor they simply told us to air his bottom and put on barrier creams.

Yesterday I saw a different health visitor and she took one look and said it was very sore and that it was thrush and I needed to get thrush cream (Canesten) straight away. When she learnt he had been this way for 6 weeks, I was made to feel like a bad mother and cried my eyes out when I got home.

I am furious no one picked this up before but also obviously concerned that this is due to antibiotics in my milk. Canesten will hopefully heal the thrush in a few days but what the heck do I do about the antibiotics if they are the cause as I am pretty reliant on them now?

Thrush can happen to babies even without mom being on antibiotics! I know a few moms who went through that, and none were on abx therapy. Don't beat yourself up over that! Plus, they can give Augmentin for mastitis, and moms still nurse on it. But yes, it an be the reason for the yeast overgrowth.

But now that you know, just focus on getting the baby better. Airing out the baby's bottom is still a good thing. Antifungal cream, Nystatin cream and powder, or oral Nystatin, if showing thrush in the mouth. Even check with your doctor about Diflucan orally. I used lanolin cream as a barrier when my daughter developed a bad rash, and it really helped (though some people are sensitive to lanolin; she was not).

I suppose if it never gets better, you may have to consider dropping breast feeding, and it's something I'd consider, but I'd find a good pediatrician first, and really run the gamut on things to try before you go there. But it's not failure, if it happens, so never think of it as that. You just need to do what's best for you AND the baby. Take care and good luck.

Thanks ladies, this feedback is really useful.

I took him to the doctor who said I was doing the right thing, using thrush cream on his bottom. They can't be certain it's actually thrush without doing a swab and they can't do a swab when he is using thrush cream so the plan is to use the cream for 2 weeks and if still no better, then stop use and get a swab done.

I am seeing my bowel doctors next Monday so will cover off issues about breastfeeding on antibiotics just in case it is thrush. The probiotic drops sound a great idea - thanks so much!!!
