Blood transfusion to treat iron deficient anemia

Hi. I was wondering if anyone had been treated for iron deficient anemia with blood transfusion. I used to have periodic iron infusions but unfortunately had an anaphylactic reaction to my last one and can no longer have them. I saw a hematologist and we are trying a different iron formulation orally first along with B12 injections. However, if I am unable to absorb the iron, he is suggesting blood transfusions with packed red blood cells every 6 months. Has anyone done this?
