Just recently I had an operation for my loop ileostomy and during my hospital stay  to my surprise I was emptying my pouch despite having not had takedown surgery. Unfortunately the output was blood and blood clots from the pouch and it was heavy and frequent, eventually before leaving the hospital the doctors stopped the  bleeding .

However upon returning home i seem to be emptying a small amount of liquid from my pouch quite regularly. When I observe the toilet bowl it looks like white liquid however the yellowish colour on the toilet paper suggests its blood.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and if so how did you deal with it, I seem to find forums like this more useful than actually consulting a doctor or surgeon since we all have the same experiences.

Thanks

Roger

I thought I had been through it all in 25 years of this and have not heard or experienced this. The best surgeon I know and I know many is Danny Takanishi he is now in Hawaii, however I would email him and ask if he knows of this. He is brilliant. I hope you find the answers, but if anything do not wait, infections move quickly with short gut and you cannot wait. If it seems wrong it probably is. Do not settle for answers that don't solve the problem. Seek out second, third and fourth opinions. Someone knows of this. It is not normal this I can assure you.

Actually Roger, this is not really out of the norm. Your small intestine continuously produces mucous, and this will collect in the pouch and pass that way. So, what you are likely passing is mucous. From time to time, you may feel an urge to have a bowel movement and will pass mucous.  There can be some minor bleeding from the surgery, though it seems that your doctors rightfully got this under control. Also, keep in mind that even though you have a loop ileo, your intestine is all still connected - just bypassed. It's possible therefore for some stool to miss the loop and go straight to the pouch.

That being said, there are still some things to look out for. It is possible to have pouchitis even if your pouch is not yet connected.  If you have  urgency or a sense that your pouch is full most of the time, pouchitis should be ruled out. Also, if the discharge is particularly foul smelling or if you are getting a large amount, then an infection or abscess cannot be excluded.

Thanks for the advice guys, I used a bed pan yesterday to observe what was coming out, it could be mucus but there's white bits; which I'm assuming is bits of small intestines mixed with blood . Thankfully its not the heavy kind of bleeding that I experienced post surgery , bathroom trips are accompanied with a slight urgency however.

I have been prescribed some medication to stop the bleeding and I haven't emptied my pouch yet so who knows I might be on the mend .
