I have had my j pouch since April of 1994.  It has given me problems off and on but I rather have this than a bag.  Within the last year I get this pain in my upper right side.  I might take a bentyl and it goes away.  A local doctor had given that to me but not sure my clinic doctor would like that.  So then a few months ago I had diarrhea so bad it was just brown water coming out of me.  Went to the ER a couple times in the middle of the night because of the pain. I was at the ER ten days ago and they gave me only 7 days worth of Cipro and 5 days of prednisone.  I finally called my doctor at the clinic but I cannot get in until Oct 27th.  They did a catscan and they told me in the er that it could be a blockage that it was suspicious and also that I had a gall stone and my gall bladder was englarged.  I tried eating solids but when I do it is bad cramping really unbearable. I am just drinking gatorade, water and ensure clear not the milk based one.  The pain was very bad last night and I massaged the area that hurt and took two bentyl and a pain pill.  I just do not know if I can last until the 27th and really am not sure if it is a blockage or gall bladder...it might be both.  The thing is local doctors do not even know what a j pouch is and I surely do not want them to operate on me for a gall bladder and then turn around and have to have another surgery at the clinic.  I dunno what to do.

What you describe sounds a lot like gallbladder trouble, but it can be tricky. I get similar symptoms and taking a course of antibiotics usually settles things. All my labs seem to rule out any serious gallbladder issue, but I know I have a gallstone going on 10+ years now. But, at least my GI lets me take antibiotics as needed on a rotating basis, so I don't have such a short treating period while waiting to be seen.

Of course, if you get severe pain, you just have to go to the ER. Sometimes it is a waste of time, but not always.

I hope you get some answers soon.

Well I had my appt with Dr Church today.  By the time I got there I was in pretty sad shape.  I was very nauseated and my j pouch certainly was not working correctly.  So in the end Dr Church went in with the scope and drained my pouch of almost a gallon of fluid.  He could not get the regular scope in me and had to use the pediatric one.  So the biggest problem I have is that I have strictures or I guess you can say a blockage keeping me from emptying completely.  On top of that yes the gall bladder has to go also.  There are also signs of blockage up higher but we are going to fix the one down low and see if that might solve the problem.  So I have two surgeries coming up here in the next month.  Having him drain my j pouch certainly was a huge help to me.  Cant wait to get these surgeries done.  I love Dr Church...he saved my live 21 years ago I will hate the day that he ever retires.
