hi, the last week I have been experiencing cramping and stomach pain, I can go to the bathroom but it does not feel right, no gas expelled. It seems it is not emptying properly. Eventually I will get gas out and if feels good for a short time.

i recently had a bout of pouchitis, took cipro and now am on tapered six week prednisone (at 15 right now started at 40).

drinking fluids like grape/prune juice helps a little , I even ran 2 miles today to shake things up, still very little movement on the gas side.

any suggestions are welcome, I will try anything. I have started changing diet to bland easily digested food, hoping that helps.

please help.

So sorry Marc,

I would start with probiotics to fight the nasty effects of the antibiotics which can include gas and cramps...for the supplements.

For the mechanical part some yoga poses are really good to chase that gas out of your body...I would look on the internet for basic yoga positions (or pilates) and try them to see if they can help you.

Do not over do it...take is slowly and be careful not to force anything.

Thank you Sharon , the advice is much appreciated.

I don't know if it is just me but a combination of probiotics and Imodium severely constipated me, I am really afraid to give up my 4 a day Imodium as that keeps me regular and i have been really lucky for the most part on my bathroom trips.

i have been off of cipro for six weeks so am confused on how to proceed. Been a long stressful painful year but I will get there.

i hate complaining on this site as most of the folks here have it really tough, so thank you.

Great advice from both Jan and Sharon - I also have a tough time taking immodium etc. - so I get that.  For me, there seems to be no rhyme or reason to why gas issues come and go - one thing - the healthier foods I eat, the worse the gas is.  So, I walk a tightrope - trying to combine fats with green veggies - overcook them (which I hate to do) - etc. etc. - lots of trial and error through the years.  Walking/running helps - yoga helps - etc. - when I felt/feel up to it.  Don't feel bad to complain about gas on this site!  It has driven most of us nuts since we got out pouch - at times it was debilitating for me...for whatever reason (I truly have no clue) - mine is doing better right now.  But, I have gone through long periods where I thought it would be the end of me - and I'll be damned - 30 year later and here I am- so hang in there and come on this site anytime you need to vent or ask questions. I wish  I had this when I got my pouch in 1987!  Good for you to reach out and ask for help/support!

Thanks guys,

i thought Cipro would knock the pouchitis out, helped  a little , then I thought Prednisone would work but since I tapered down to 15 it has come back. last night was the worst , it was like UC all over again.

Doc told me to up my Pred to 20ml or 2 pills again and see if it helps.

One year in and this is slowly killing me , than God for this site.

Thanks again to all on this site

Unfortunately, prednisone is not a good long term solution. If it looks like you will need it long term, Entocort (budesonide) is the better choice, as it. Mostly stays in the gut and the amount that does get absorbed is quickly metabolized by the liver.

Also, you may have to look at immune modulators and/or biologics.

I love that reply Chris - I used to have to do something similar.  Then, had a surgery go wrong - and had a full "open up the old fashioned way) surgery to fix that - well, that surgeon really went after adhesions, etc. and while it was a terrible experience, I can now get rid of gas (almost) always without doing contortions!  I did them for 20 years - also got on my stomach and pushed my hands into gut and pushed it around and out!  Only people on this site would get it.  Gas is the nemesis of the poucher- or one of them!  So sorry for anyone struggling with it.  It is not fun.

Mrs. P - yep - it can and does consume you.  I had some really good years with pouch - had it for 30.  But the last 7 or so have not been good.  It's not all bad, but it is a constant effort to just do the simplest things...it becomes so much easier to just stay home and find activities at home to entertain oneself than to fight the battle of going out....I mean - going out to dinner with friends - forget it- I'd be miserable within about 3 bites of food.  And so it goes...
