Can you binge eat with a j-pouch?

i used to binge eat all the time with the ostomy. Binge eating is probably not great for overall health, but i did it to relieve stress, out of boredom, sweet tooth, or while watching t.v. I would eat a tub of popcorn, chocolates, full box of candies --- all in one sitting!! then wash it down with a large soda. Roll Eyes

i feel like if i ever were to do that with a j-pouch (not now, pouch is just 2 months old and cranky) - then the j-pouch would feel like bursting! or i would be sleeping on the toilet! It was convenient having the bag so i could binge eat and let it all come out without even noticing or feeling anything --- or moving off the couch!!

like right now it's friday night and i'm watching t.v. and i wanna munch, munch, munch, all throughout the movie but i can't!

yes, i admit i can be a slob! Big Grin

- anyone here binge eat once in a while with a j-pouch?

- any adverse effects?

thanks!

Funny question.. In the old days when my colon was healthy I ate so much popcorn while watching tv. I haven't tried popcorn yet as I'm only 7 1/2 weeks out like you. But I've been eating all sorts of other junk with no problem. Last night at 9pm I had a half pint of Ben and Jerry's ice cream. Been having lots of candy like Swedish fish, licorice and enjoying different dips and chips. Cheese dip, quacomole, hummus, etc. it's been fun as I'm trying to gain weight. All ready put 10 pounds on since takedown, about another 5 to go. I'm more of a grazer just grabbing stuff all day long. I've read some of your posts and I know this has been a struggle for you but maybe try not to over focus the j pouch. Start to enjoy food and socializing. Are you holding it longer to try and decrease frequency? Don't run on every urgency. Also get out of the house for long stretches. I find when I'm out and about I don't go as much as I'm not really thinking about it. Good luck
Short answer is yes when you are a sufficient time out from takedown. I got a sodium overdose from binging on sodium 30 days after takedown which sent me to the emergency room, but 20 years later I can do that same binge and not blink.

Like Randi M, I am guilty of binging on ice cream. It's the one food I can really binge on. I have eaten many pints of Ben and Jerry's in my day. I just cannot stop at one scoop. I need to finish the container. Yesterday I was in New York City and had the large cup of Haagen-Dasz Mint Chip and it did not even give me gas. Usually I get a bit of gas from ice cream binges but the Haagen-Dasz binge really did nothing to me. The fact that I was walking around and it was extremely hot in NYC yesterday probably helped me use up the energy provided from all that sugar.

Obviously these are not healthy eating behaviors but from time to time they can be done with no problem. People who are not far out from takedown should really think twice before having a large meal or binging on anything.
