Thank you for taking the time to read this. My husband, Michael age 30, had his colon removed last February. It's been an arduous recovery and we find ourselves at a crossroads. Mike has had six months of horrid anal pain each time he goes to the bathroom. My husband, a young, strong, thirty year old, sobs uncontrollably daily due to pain from going to the bathroom. Mike was misdiagnosed with proctalgia fugux and his doctor had him do Botox therapy as well as physical therapy and neither worked. We finally went in for a second opinion last week and the doctor believes Mikes pain is inflammation or Cuffitis. He checked the area, but the pain was so excruciating that he could only get a quick look. He put Mike on Canasa and after three days of no change, Mike and I began reading this message board. We saw that many people improved after taking Cipro combined with Canasa. Mike had Cipro left from his initial surgery and began taking it Friday. By Saturday his pain was 90% gone. An amazing development. As of yesterday Mike is sweating through his clothes, is freezing all the time, and is crawling out of his skin- very fidgety. This could be from Canasa or Cipro - no one seems to know. We've called all of the doctors who have seen him recently and they all want us to see a primary care physician. The proctologist is glad the pain is gone and encouraged by the results from starting the Cipro (i don't know why we had to come up with it) and wants Mike to stay on it. Is this reaction something any of you have experienced on cipro/canasa course? I just feel like we are running in circles and are being passed off from one doctor to another without any clear solution and i'm not sure how a primary care doc comes in to play.

I tend to get anxiety while on cipro. It is a side effect if you look I have not experienced any sweartinh from with meds you have mentioned. I do experience the excruciating anal pain at times. He can try nifedipine or rectiv if he has anal fissures. Both are by prescription.
Thanks for responding. He's been checked for fissures, but they haven't found any. They think the pain is from inflammation...
My guess would be the cipro. Antibiotics can have strange effects on some people. I would do some serious research on it. Ask the pharmacist. They usually know more than the doctors when it comes to adverse reactions . Also check the drug book and read the insert information that you usually don't get from the pharmacy. But it sounds like a reaction to an antibiotic. I'm allergic to al lot of them, cipro being one of them, but mine are aniphalaxis . Good luck and I hope he feels better.
Canasa can cause flu-like symptoms. I'd suggest stopping the Canasa to see what happens. Since the Cipro seems to be what provided relief, I hope it's just a reaction to the Canasa (and that he turns out not to need it, anyway).
Thanks everyone. I started emailing with Dr. Shen, who everyone seems to love. He's been very helpful. He said that Cipro doesn't usually cause flu like symptoms and he wants us to have Mike checked for c diff. I guess the antibiotics can make dormant c diff active.
I just started a 14 day course of flagyl and cipro for pouchitis and cuffitis and I'm the same. Very fidgety and lots of insomnia with cold night sweats but decided to tough it out to hopefully resolve the issues. But honestly not sure which is worse right now.
I have high regard for Dr Shen. , however I always experience flu like symptoms while on cipro. I am on it now and have severe muscle aches. My GI who trained under him said many people get joint and muscle pain while on it. I do agree that a c diff test is a good idea. I often have them whil on cipro.
