I have had my jpouch now for approximately 25 years. The Doctor who did the surgery in Philadelphia told me of all the bad things that may happen after surgery, things like pouchitis, leakage, and kind of a general pain in the lower abdomen.

I have gone through the procedure of strengthening the lower abdominal muscles and it was found that approximately half of my rectum doesn't want to work.

What I'm wondering is they have on the market a ring that goes around the rectum and it gets pumped up to tighten up the internal sinker muscle that I don't have anymore.

What can I say I'm tired of wearing a diaper shoving a napkin or paper towel in my butt crack to hopefully catch most of the leakage; however, the surgeon I spoke with does not install them anymore as he has not had much success with this thing. Is anyone else had this little circular artificial sphincter installed and and how well does it work.

I am tired of messing the bed messing a diaper and generally just having a messy night. My late wife would sometimes wake me up and tell me to go clean up my butt.

I was going to go to Orlando next and speak to a surgeon down there.

Thanks so much for any answers you might have.

Artificial sphincters have been around for at least a couple of decades, mostly for urinary incontinence. My dad had one for urinary incontinence following prostate surgery. It was successful for him. But, urinary incontinence is different than fecal incontinence. There are a litany of complications, but the main one is erosion through the internal walls. They are always coming up with new designs. I hope the surgeon has some good options for you. A while back I read about sacral nerve stimulators to restore continence.

I presume you are not ready to entertain an ostomy.
