Hi Folks,

I'm 72 and had my pouch done in 2004 and doing just fine. Since my surgery the PSA readings for my prostate have ranged between 6.5 and 9.5 which is higher than normal. My Urologist is Dr, Robert Dillon, a sole practitioner, the last of a dying breed, and a kind and gentle man. He works closely with Dr. Joel Bauer, one of the J-Pouch surgeon Gurus here in NYC so he's that rare urologist has treated many J-pouch patients with prostate issues.

Dr, Dillon believes that men with J-Pouches may often have higher PSA readings because of the proximity of the pouch and prostate. He believes that since the pouch lays on the prostate, any slight inflammation of the pouch can contribute to an inflammation of the prostate which in turn can lead to a higher PSA reading.

So, if you have a prostate and a j-pouch, can you post or email me your experience with PSA readings. It could end up influencing the treatment of others .

Thanks.

Jeff

My PSA value has been below 2 until recently when, after a three year interval of no tests, it was found to be 6.0.  My urologist put me on a four to six week schedule with Cipro and another try at PSA returned a value of 1.9.  I experienced no symptoms or concerns about any problems such as a bacterial infection or prostatitis.  I have had my pouch for 15 years and my age is 81.  I would dispute any claim related to pouch proximity as a cause of an elevated PSA.  It doesn't make sense.
