Hi everyone,
So I just had my second baby and I am not interested in having another one just yet, if at all. My OBGYN put me on birth control pills and I have been progressively getting worse (jpouch wise) since Ive been on it. I finally figured out that the pill was the only thing that changed and I took myself off and called for some flagyl to help with the pouch. Now I am afraid to go back on the pill. So I am wondering if anyone has an IUD and if so if it affects their pouch at all? Anyone else have problems with the pill like I did?

Hi Shawanna,

I was on the pill after my j pouch and my GI wanted to stop all bleeding (from my period) and also stop having pills that made me cycle through. I was very anemic and my period just decimated me in terms of diarrhea, fatigue, etc. I am so lucky to have my pouch, but it isn't exactly an overachiever pouch and acts up alot.

Anyways, I had the Mirena IUC put in April of 2010. It has been amazing, no problems with it. I don't even remember having a period now. I have now been diagnosed with Crohn's and have multiple fistulas and setons, so I would not have it removed for anything. It really regulated my body.

It has affected my pouch in nothing but positive ways!

Good luck!

thanks you for responding and I am glad to hear you love your IUD. Do you feel like the hormones are what cause your jpouch to flare up? I really believe that the hormones in the pill made it flare and that is why I am scared of the IUD. My jpouch has been very good and this is only the 2nd time in 5.5 years that i had to go on flagyl for pouchitis.

Hi, I've had my J-pouch for almost fifteen years and for more than four years, have had a Mirena IUD. If you're one of those lucky ones who can use an egg timer to time your cycle, then that's the only "problem" I can think of. I've never been regular so it's I have kind of been able to figure out what's my cycle more or less. Haven't had a period or any spotting in the last four years--though in the last year or so I do get occasional cramping but it doesn't last for more than a day. The one time I've ovulated, it lasted about three days, but only one really bad day which much as it sucked, was waaaaay better than the agony I used to go through. I highly recommend getting an IUD. Makes life so much easier!!

yes mirena delivers hormones. My docs pretty much made me get one about 6months ago to control bleeding as I have adenomyosis. For me, Mirena has been awful. Massive pain almost every single day. And the first few months were absolutely debilitating. I am getting it taken out this week.. hopefully.. if it can be done in the office. I'd rather get blood transfusions and iron infusions over the constant mirena pain.
