Anyone familiar with this drug used for something other than low cholesterol?

I saw my GI yesterday and told him about all this darn gas. I too have to bend way over to get more gas out. He said part of my problem too is that I don't have a Gall Bladder either so that just builds up more problems in my digestive tract.

He believes a lot of my problems are diet related too. So I have to have more chicken, fish, meat, veggies that I can tolerate, and cut down on my carbs too. I have to admit when I do eat that way, I don't have as many problems with diarehha and cramps and so forth.

Its when I cook more like Italian food. I use a lot of garlic, scallions and roasted red peppers, tomatoes and so forth. Being a full blooded Italian, I was raised with this kind of food which I still love. So I have to really discipline myself and this will not be easy.

The doctor has sent me for a blood test which I did yesterday too including C-diff. He also informed me that he would like a stool sample later after my meds are finished. I tried to push him that I would like to have all these tests over and done with as soon as possible. He prescribed meds that are normally treated for Low Cholesterol and the meds are called "Colestipol Micronized, 1 gram.

PRESCRIBED FOR: Colestipol is used together with dietary modifications for the treatment of high blood cholesterol levels. Other less common uses include treatment of diarrhea due to increased intestinal bile acids after some types of intestinal surgery and treatment of itching associated with partial obstruction to the flow of bile due to liver disease. The itching is believed to be due to the accumulation of bile acids in the body.

Has anyone else been on this medication for anything other than low cholesterol?

Yes!

I am on something similar called Cholestyramine (Questran). It's actually a powder that I mix in with my morning smoothie or orange juice. My doc prescribed it to try to decrease my jpouch output and make it less liquidy. It does all that and more!

I actually tried colestipol (hated the inconvenience of powder vs the pill) but as it turns out, the powder just works better for me.

It is important to note, the drug does effect the absorbance of other MEDS so do make sure you try and takes those about an hour before or else you must wait 6 hours after!

One thing that stuck out to me from what you said, if garlic and Italian meals tend to bother you, you should look into the FODMAP diet. Search for it from previous posts.

Good luck!
Thank you for your replies.

I didn't know that you should take this med and hour before other meds. I have other meds to take in the morning so I take them all together with breakfast. Thanks for the tip.

My meds for this is in a pill form but I would rather have it in a powder form because another med I was on and am still on is due to that I have very low energy and my test results are low in Potassium and I can't eat bananas because I feel like I swallowed a bowling ball.

I will look into that FODMAP diet too. So far I know I have to eliminate roasted peppers, tomatoes, tomato sauce because that gives me trouble.

Thanks,

I also wonder if FODMPAS is worth a try. You need to follow it strictly for about 8 weeks and then follow the reintroduction plan which will help you identify any problem foods. There has been a lot of success using this in IBS and now clinicians are looking to try it in IBD.

For those in the UK ask to be referred to a specialist gastro dietitian who has been trained in FODMAPS to make sure you get the right advice taking into consideration any other conditions you have. I would guess that there are similarly trained dietitians in other countries but of course this may come at a cost.

Would be interested to hear if it helps.
Well, I had the Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS) along with the Sigmoidoscopy and once again, I have Pouchitis.

Last year, I had pouhitis at least 3 times and this is getting old fast.

I want to know why I get this so often? I see the doctor for a follow up next month but the staff said diet has nothing to do with it.

I have not been feeling well for at least 2 months or more. But got new something was not right when I was have between 12 & 15 BM a day with taking 4 oz of Imodium throughout the day.

Wow, really? That stinks. I am on a combination of Cipro, Metronidazole (Flagly) and Canasa Suppositories.

But being on Cipro all the time doesn't your body build up too much dependacy on it so it will no longer be effective? That is what I was told which is why people tend to be put on different meds so one does not lose its effectiveness.

I switched to this doctor because he is more in tune with other tests to be done.

I'd prefer not to be on Cipro, but it's fine - *much* better than feeling lousy. For me, at least, it seems to have no side effects at all. I'm on the lowest dose that keeps pouchitis away, which for me is 500 mg daily. There seem to be different opinions about whether it's important to rotate antibiotics (if you're on them all the time) to avoid antibiotic-resistant bacteria, but it just hasn't been an issue for me. There are other folks here who've also been on Cipro for years. It's not completely risk-free, but IMO it's well worth it to feel well.
Hi Marianne,

Love the photo of you and your dog.

I am am still seeing Dr Ciambotti. The meds is what I can't stand because they make me so quizzy in my stomach. I was up for almost 2 hrs last night due to me thinking I was going to throw up.

Even putting these meds in my mouth the taste is disgusting. But at least I am feeling better as things have calmed down. I just don't want to be on these meds all the time. That is bad enough, but with them, you can't have a drink is more than I can stand.

Not that I am a heavy drinker mind you but on May 2nd, I have to get my results from Memorial Sloan Kettering in NYC because I have to go for tests to see if my Kidney Cancer returned. And no way am I going to NYC with my brother and and drink water and not drink wine.

I better be off these meds before then by a few days and I should be because I have no intention of going in Manhattan and be sober.
