So I'm a few months out from takedown and currently have a frequency of 7/8/9 over the course of a good 24 hours, or 10/11/12 over a difficult one.

I recently met with my surgeon and he feels the frequency on my bad days is still too high. He has left it up to me whether or not I try a course of fagyl. He says its very difficult to diagnose pouchitis shortly after takedown.

So, is there any harm in getting a course and running through it to see its effects? Any troubles after I finish it etc?

Thanks

Even if this is not pouchitis, bacterial overgrowth can cause the same symptoms. I notice that if my frequency picks up and I have a lot of intestinal gas, it is time for a week or so of Flagyl. That sets me right as rain. Since it is Flagyl, I think you are pretty safe, and there really is no downside, other than possible side effects, but they are short lived.

But, Scott and your doctor are right that this early out, it is difficult, if not impossible to sort out. That is why the easy stuff like bowel slowers and bulking agents (fiber supplements) are suggested. But, I never found bulking agents to reduce frequency, just thicken the stool. For me, it actually increased frequency, as it added to the overall volume.
