Hi folks, I had a complete colectomy in 2006 and now have a jpouch (ulcerative colitis). I suffer from irritable pouch syndrome but that is mostly under control now. I take bentyl before meals, and a lomotil or two. I take 50 mg of Zoloft in the mornings and amytriptaline in the evening. Lately I've been feeling a serious chemical depression. It's been going on for several months and there are no life factors that have changed or should be causing it. My life is good. I shouldn't be depressed. I exercise regularly and do my best to follow a healthy diet. I've always (even before my disease) suffered from depression and it is generic in my family. Something is off chemically and I would like to try out a new antidepressant. I've been on Zoloft for 9 years now (ever since my surgery) and I'm wondering if I should wean off it and try something new, or else just add another pill to my repertoire...the amytriptaline is for my IPS so I think that should be kept the same. What do you recommend and which antidepressant? Thanks for your time and consideration!

When changing antidepressants you must do it carefully, slowly, and under the care of a physician who is familiar with the drugs.  It takes a good 6-8 weeks before a new anti-depressant will start to work and it could take longer to get the dose right for you.  Please be very careful when you do this.  You might also like to consider counselling or therapy while you are in the midst of this change.
