For those on continual antibiotics, what do you do when you get a yeast infection? This is especially for the girls, although guys can answer as well as I guess you can get yeast as well. Do you stop the antibiotic for a week till the mono stat clears it and then recontinue?, or use it while still taking the antibiotics? This seems like it will be a yo yo long term pattern.

I use watered down vinegar as a douche. Sometimes I have to do it two times in a day but it works better than monostat for me.
I would use the monistat at the same time. It still worked even though I was also on the antibiotics.
It does suck though when you get one problem, while trying to fix a different problem.
Hope it works for you,

AllyKat, I'd turn the question around: why *wouldn't* you use the Monistat while on antibiotics?
Hi. Sorry you have this additional issue! My daughter gets her Dr to prescribe the one pill Diflucan, I don't know the generic for it. That works for her. It usually takes one to three days to totally clear it up. She takes while on the antibiotic. She also takes probiotics to try to keep it from happening but as you know, it can still happen....
I had a terrible yeast infection from taking cipro for too long. Guys are most prone in the leg pits/scrotum areas where "jock itch" (also a yeast infection) can hit. I went on anti-fungal pills (diflucan) and rotated onto xifaxin (antibiotic but not systemically absorbed and only works in the gut) and it cleared up in a few weeks. Also very important is to keep these areas dry after showering which is why I use a blow dryer on my leg pits and pubic areas after showering as a preemptive measure. As well as using antifungal powders, Zeabsorb being the best.
Yeast infections are not for women only.

Thanks, I was put on difulcan.
Why won't I use this or the monostat, just seems that as long as your on antibiotics than you'll get this yeast problems, the monostat might just temporary clear it up but then it would just cone back if on long term antibiotics. Thus a yo yo effect? Am I making sence?

I'm not sure whether longer-term use of a treatment like Monistat (or something else) might do the trick. It's worth asking your doctor, at least. Your Gyn might have some ideas, too. Although these yeast infections are caused by antibiotics, Gyns often treat troublesome, persistent yeast infections. There may be a solution (or at least a better compromise) out there (e.g. boric acid vaginal suppositories). Good luck!
yikes almost afraid to ask but what are symptoms of yeast infection..iam always concerned about c-diff but not knowledgeable about yeast infection..
quote:what are symptoms of yeast infection
Symptoms as I understand them may be different for women who are prone to vaginal yeast infections, than they are for men who get them on the skin. If you get a yeast infection on the skin, most likely areas are where the sun don't shine and moisture collects, which is legpits, armpits and in guys the underside of the scrotum ("jock itch") and for both sexes, the rectal cavity. The yeast infection manifests as a red rash which simultaneously itches and burns. If you see a rash any dermatologist who is competent can scrape samples of skin from the rash, examine them under a microscope, and tell you in less than 30 seconds whether it is yeast. Treatment options are antifungal creams or pills, or both, and antifungal powders can be effective in preventing repeat infections in those areas, or thwarting one that is just getting started. During periods of heavy antibiotic use I have seen red patches in my armpits and legpits and they go away when I douse the area with powder and keep it dry. The enemies of yeast are sunlight and dryness- they need darkness and moisture. This is why, unfortunately for some of our female members, the vagina is a favored bodily area for them to inhabit.
certain antibiotics seem to make me more prone to yeast infections. so allycat can you identify which ones. Diflucan isn't supposed to be given frequently because it causes liver damange. But I can honestly say anything over the counter like monitstat hasn't ever touched a yeast infection cause by GI prescribed antibiotics. There are stronger suppository, foam type of meds that your gyne can prescribe.
Yes pretty much all antibiotics cause this for me and I think it's even in my butt this time as well. Augmentum is a nasty one. Difucan is doing nothing. I switched back to xifacan and will get some monostat ASAP. Monostat always works but that is when I have finished the course. I never had this on a continual antibiotic basis before? Oh gosh! what am I going to do if I need to be on continual antibiotics?
Rebe, you will know if u have a yeast infection! trust me.
