Hi,
A month or so ago you may have seen a post I made about going from having an end ileostomy (step 1) straight to a j-pouch (step 3) with no temporary ileostomy inbetween (would have been step 2).
I chose to have this operation and unfortunately the stitching broke down soon after and i had to undergo the surgery to create a temporary ileostomy anyway otherwise fluid would have continued to leak into my body.

Since im not seeing my consultant for a follow up for a few weeks now and i've just left the hospital, I thought i'd ask a few questions here.

What are the chances the pouch will heal by itself, or even, does this mean i am less likely to have a successful j-pouch when it comes to takedown?

I have alot of mucous coming from my rectum.. it mostly leaks out at night, i've read this is normal but is there any way to control it?

Not sure what else to ask, but all information is useful.

Thanks
What a tough break! I am sure you are feeling like kicking yourself, but the leak likely would have occurred regardless. Sounds like your surgeon was on top of it and dealt with it quickly.

To answer your question, I think it just all depends. Depends on how big the leak is, whether there is tension on the anastomosis, and how good the blood supply is in that area.

I had a leak. It sealed off by itself, even without the ileostomy, and I even had a large presacral abscess. I guess I had a good blood supply and good treatment of the abscess. I am in my 18th year post op and doing fine. But not everyone has those results.
