I had constant problems with quite painful irritation on the anus and approximately 3/4 inch into the rectum for about four years, even though I use VSL3 and used various steroidal, antihistamine, and antibiotic creams, and even straight vaseline. I even purchased an add-on bidet to see if that would help. Nothing really helped. I finally started using Huggies Natural Care baby wipes, which has almost completely eliminated the irritation for the last two years. The method I use after defecation is to place my middle finger in the middle of the towelette and push it into the rectum approximately 3/4 inch(be very gentle), pull the towelette out, fold in half and insert into rectum approximately 1/2 inch, pull towelette out and fold in half again(the folding is obviously to cover stool debris), then wipe the exterior anal surface to remove residual debris. Of course you could use a separate towelette for each step if you're squeamish. Wash your hands very thoroughly afterwards. This may not be recommended by your gastroenterologist, so use the method at your own risk(I sure wouldn't use this method if I had any serious infection or ulceration), but I was at my wits end and quite miserable and was offered nothing by my doctors that actually helped my problem, so I am extremely grateful that this worked for me. I can't vouch for other brands of baby wipes because I didn't bother trying any others since this worked so well for me. Again, I would definitely ask your gastroenterologist before you try this method, because they may have some very good reasons for you not to do this and may have more recent treatments that would treat this condition more effectively.
This is similar to what I know do after failed rectal treatments etc to help with my constant itching, burning and irritation. I am now off antibiotics finally also. When I discussed this s my colorectal surgeon a couple of years ago he saw no issue with this. Hell, I have been inserting rectal suppositories almost continually fur over a year as I do have some active ulceration as well. I can't imagine a wipe is going to cause concern as long as you are gentle. I go through way more wipes than you probably do and use the flushable ones. I have noticed also that this slight manipulation often releases any residual stool that may not have been released if but for gentle manipulation and I'm sure this residual stool in the anal canal accounts fur the bulk of the misery with anal irritation.
