Americans: please help me with the universal mandate (Obamacare)

So a friend of mine just got her US green card... She's super excited after studying there for years,but she'd come home to Canada fore care (she was still considered a CAN resident). Anyway, now she's moving to the US but has IBD. She's deathly worried about the new mandate and whether or not it would cover her.

Secondly, how much are the rough estimates for monthly payment? She's in her early thirties.

She also wants to get surgery soon to remove her colon (at my advice) and is considering the Cleveland Clinic. Yet, she is a NY resident. How does that work in this process?

Any help would be appreciated !

The first thing she needs to do is get insurance coverage. Obamacare does not fully implement until 2014. Do not assume she will have any sort of "free" coverage.

As to getting surgery at Cleveland Clinic while living in New York, it all depends on her insurance coverage, unless she wants to pay out of pocket (not recommended).

IMO the significant feature of the Affordable Care Act isn't that insurance is mandated, but that it will be possible for individuals to buy reasonable insurance. Open enrollment in the Health Insurance Exchanges is scheduled to begin in October on a state-by-state basis. As with current plans, higher prices will tend to buy two things: lower co-pays and other out of pocket costs for treatment, and access to a broader group of providers. For coverage out of state it's critical to select a policy that provides that option, even though it will likely add cost.

We won't know until we are there. The key is to have a large percentage participating, so that is the trick.

Jan, thank you for posting that article to the Obama care facts, currently I'm 24 years old and covered under both of my parents insurance till I'm 25, which is Next April. I will need to start looking for something before that time comes and having those facts will aid in my decision.

It won't as affordable as some think. for people with rare disease it will harm us so I can't back it. I also have a rare disease called F.A.P.

Hopefully it is worth the hassle in the end. Good luck to your friend but I wouldn't count on this until it actually happens. Nothing in stone yet.

DGTRACY: the current health care mandates coverage of children THRU age 25. I don't know if the new health care will cut off parental coverage one year earlier. But currently, a child is covered on their parents policy until age 26.
