This is the most comprehensive article regarding current research on the gut that I have seen. This guy writes as an outsider, who vounteered to be used for some of the research he discusses. Very well written, and he pulls in a lot of different things that scientists are learning about the gut - specifically the colonization of the colon - and how it affects our health. As suspected / expected, what we eat has a complex impact on our bodily system.

I think the thing I like the most is that this gives some logical, western, scientific-method-researched backbone to some of the speculative recommendations a lot of people make about what we should eat and not eat.

There is also an interesting finding: they tested 14 over the counter probiotics and found only 1 had exactly the strains listed on the package. Hmmmm...

Also - instead of advocating probiotics, there is more and more emphasis on advocating prebiotics to feed and nourish the bacteria we should have filling our guts.

After reading this article, I want to do two things:
1. Make up a cheer for H. Pylori (it apparently should be seen as a hero rather than a villian)
2. Ask the author and researchers, "So what if we don't have a colon?"

Actually, the article did not specify which 14 were tested in the study. The point was that since probiotics are in an unregulated industry, there is no assurance that any particular brand contains what is on the label. The article in this topic indicated that there was less emphasis on probiotic supplements (few of the scientists took them), and more emphasis on prebiotics. Prebiotics are the complex carbohydrates that are only digested by gut bacteria, and are the various types of fiber we eat. The conclusion was that it is only by eating a diet rich in a variety of plant fiber sources that the good gut bacteria will get fed.
