This is more of a heads up, because it has been really great for me.

About 7 months before I was diagnosed with UC and then needed emergency surgery, my employer started offering AFLAC supplemental insurance in addition to our regular insurance. I signed up for a couple of the coverages, and the deduction from my checks was pretty reasonable.

After signing up, I didn't even think much about the insurance.

Until I was hospitalized for 30 days. When the bills started to roll in, I pretty quickly reached my deductible ($1,000) and out of pocket maximum ($3,000) on my regular insurance, and I'm thankful everyday that I was able to pay that $4,000 out of savings.

But then I remembered the AFLAC Hospital Indemnity policy that I'd signed up for. For my first hospital stay, AFLAC took about ten days after I filed the claim, providing documentation from the hospital and cut me a check for over $5000.

For my second surgery last July, which cost me zero out of pocket because I'd already maxed out my policy's deductible and out of pocket max, they took less than a week to cut me a check for $2,400.

That money has been an enormous help, and I'll be getting another check when my takedown happens later this year.

I guess the moral of the story is if you can afford AFLAC or if your employer offers it, it's been a godsend to my family during a really rough year.

Your mileage may vary...
