Hi gang!

I changed my appliance yesterday, and discovered the huge red sore under my flange (about the size of two quarters) has not only returned, but enlarged and is bleeding (and itches like crazy). AND, a new problem, a red lump about twice the size of a pea, is growing on the outside of my stoma, but I have no idea just what the heck it is. My intestine is quite small, so this lump is really big looking, and it's bleeding. Any one have any suggestions as to just what it might be? And/or how, aside from medicated powder I've been using, can I treat and get rid of, the sore on my skin? I'm still a ileostomy virgin, it's only been four months, any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Just saw Dr Cohens fellow (a blonde Aussie, SO cute! He made me feel better just looking at him!), it was a bleed. The tip of my stoma has been rubbing against the plastic lip of my flange, cutting it. He said it must have been bleeding for months as it was quite the large bump. He lanced it, treated it with silver nitrate, and told me to keep a close eye on it. If it gets infected I'm screwed, so I'm watching it closely. Was kind of gross, when he lanced it, blood spurt everywhere! Thankfully, it doesn't really hurt, just burning a bit. He told me this is a very common thing, but I should have saw him sooner, problem is, my stoma hangs down (it's quite long, about 2 1/2 inches) and the bleed was on the underside, so I never noticed it until I was cleaning it yesterday. I'm still a stoma virgin, guess I have a lot to learn. But why is it every time I see something like that my brain goes right to cancer? Probably because once was enough, guess, deep down, I'm paranoid, and terrified, it will come back, lousy brain, D'OH!!!!

Cheers,

Eric,

I had the same problem when I first got Wee Willie. (I did have pyoderma, but that's a different story). Wee Willie is like yours, he hangs down and was getting cut on the sharp edge of the wafer where I'd cut it to shape.. My stoma nurse changed me onto the Convatec moldable wafers and that solved the problem as no sharp edges.

Love and hugs
