I myself have a j-pouch and I've had it for almost three years. I have figured out what I need to eat and what I can't eat. I have it because of FAS. My grandmother who is almost 80 years had a partial colectomy over thirty years ago and only has a tiny portion of her colon left. She had the partial colectomy due to FAS as well. However, over the past six months, everything has gone to hell. She is having diarrhea constantly and is going in and out of the hospital and then going to inpatient rehab facilities for days because it is affecting her sodium levels and she gets very weak. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem the doctors know what they are doing. They've tried to say dairy is ok which is unbelievable because I know what dairy does to me. So my point is, we are dealing with very uneducated hospitalists, PCP, and nutritionists.

At this time, I am also trying to advocate as much as possible for her because the doctors don't seem interested in seeking out help from specialists around the country to determine what is going on. They keep running tests and nothing is found. She goes to the hospital and rehab, send her home, prescribe her opium top stop diarrhea (not working), etc.... etc....

Has anyone ever dealt with something like this before? Also, what are some good foods I can suggest? I know what works for me but I don't know much about someone who has a portion of her colon left.

Any suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.
