Hey friends!
So thankful for this page, as I research and plan for my surgeries. I'm in a bit of a weird position though, and wondered if there are any Canadian J-pouchers that can help me learn a bit about how it works up here? I live in BC, but am an American married to a Canadian. I currently still have US health insurance, but that might not last for much longer, as I'm in the Permanent Residency process, and my job will switch me over to their Canadian branch once it comes though.
At the moment, I'm on my last available medicine combo, and am attempting "one last time" to taper of Prednisone. If I cannot taper off of it without flaring (as has been the truth for 4 years), then we have to schedule the surgeries. However, I'm not sure how that would work in Canada. Best to my knowledge, once I become eligible for BC's MSP plan, I would need to go through the whole process again of finding a family doctor, having them refer me to a GI specialist, and then getting put on a waiting list for surgery? Is this right? And also, are you able to choose your surgeon at all, or is it truly just that you're assigned someone local-ish?
I would LOVE if the dear Canadian j-pouchers out there can help walk my husband and I through the process a bit! Please post your experiences and advice, and know that I'm TRULY grateful for any help you can give me in navigating this! I'm nervous that the whole process will take too long, and that my outcome might be worse if the waiting game turns me into an emergency case again. Thanks in advance for your help!
