I really feel for this woman. Tons of polips but only one prior REALLY bad bout with colitis. Made elective decision for colectomy due to cancer risk. She's a young woman with kids and wants to be sure she's around.

6.5 hour procedure took 8.5 hours. She will ultimately have a J pouch.

She has been on my mind, obviously, and I think she is incredibly strong for making this decision.

We are going to send something from the hospital gift shop up to her. I don't know if she has any allergies to flowers, food is obviously out and not sure she'll be up to magazines. Any thoughts/suggestions?

An in person visit. Seeing family and friends after my colectomy lifted my spirits. My parents drove 1.5 hours from Connecticut to New York City every day and then stayed at my bedside all day. Occasionally they were relieved by other relatives/friends. Someone was always with me. I really think that helped because it gave me a second voice with the hospital as well.

If she is a good friend then seeing you in person will empower her. When you see her, I would suggest bringing flowers or perhaps a book if she likes to read.
My best ever post op visit was when a girlfriend showed up, blow dryer and cream-rince in hand and washed my hair for me...I have never forgotten the pure bliss 3 days post op of having a hair wash...
Best gift ever! If you are up to it they could do the trick...or a really nice nighty that she can easily put on with and I.V. in her arm.

You said you are an acquaintance, so a visit might be weird. I say buy her some nice creams from Bath and Body Works or someplace like that. If it isn't her fragrance, then she can always exchange for what is. Vanilla scent is usually popular and not such a strong smell. Exfoliating body scrub her hands is great. Your hands feel so soft after you use it.

a little stuffed animal

I recently bought my cousin one of those "pet pillows" which is a pillow that has the head and feet of a bear, but it also has a strap that folds up into a velcro patch on the belly side, so that it looks like a stuffed animal rather than a pillow when you strap it or velcro it up. In other words, it can be used as a pillow or as a stuffed animal. The one I bought has the NY Giants logo on it and I bought it at clearance sale of Giants merchandise at Bob's Stores.

Here it is - I got it for $10 at Bob's:

You guys are the best. Luckily, I've avoided the hospital for many years, but I had forgotten the little things that are truly appreciated!

She's my husband's coworker's wife, so I only met her once. It was at a company party where we huddled in a corner and she asked me what to expect.

Since we don't know her well, I'm just sending up 2 different scented lotions, 2 magazines, balloon and card. It's not a lot, but hopefully she is able to enjoy them.

Thanks!
