My doc (my j pouch surgeon) is doing my pouchoscopy this time. She instructed Ted me to take 119 g of mi relax- a small bottle, as prep. Anyone do this prep before? I’ve don’t a ton of other preps, but not this one.

My doc says to start drinking from 2-5pm, but I work until 4pm and I don’t get home until closer to 5pm. How quickly does it kick in? I don’t want to be up until midnight going. It also says to mix it with just 32 oz, which I’m glad about bc I had drinking the stuff, but I feel like that’s not a lot of fluids. Thoughts? They must know what they are doing…

i had surgery in Aug for a twisted bowel and internal hernia and the pain has started up again. Idk why but they want to do a pouchoscopy before imaging. I’m in pain most days. Hopefully it’ll show something but I’m not optimistic.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Some docs do include MiraLax in their pouchoscopy prep, but IMO it’s only reasonable if the scope will be passed well into the small bowel (which might be the plan after bowel surgery) or if one tends to have firm stools. My (new) GI’s prep included MiraLax, but a phone call to the right person reduced it to clear liquids after midnight and a couple of enemas before leaving the house for the procedure.

I don’t think anyone has suggested not doing anything. The most common reduced prep seems to be (more or less) no food after dinner the night before, no food or drink the morning of the procedure (this varies a bit), and at least a couple of enemas, usually tap water, an hour or two before the procedure. It is very easy to rinse out a J-pouch with an enema, since they aren’t very big. The enemas are likely to be much more useful than MiraLax if your stool is normally unformed. If you want to add some MiraLax it won’t do any harm to the procedure, and you can answer “yes” when they ask if you used MiraLax as part of your prep.

Okay, I’ll have a protein shake for dinner I think. I’m nervous about having a full fledge dinner. Of course my kids’ parent teacher conference was swapped from tomorrow to tonight at 5:30! I’ll do half the Miralax and a fleet in the AM. My appt is at 7:30am so I’m be up early I guess! Thanks for the advice everyone! Even though this is supposed to be easier than a colonoscopy, I truly hate this and the prep. I’m such a baby.

I just had my pouchoscopy yesterday. I did clear liquids only the day before, a bottle of magnesium citrate the morning of, and a quick enema rinse an hour before I left the house. Everything was fine. To be honest, the day of clear liquids had me pretty cleared out by itself. No sedation for me and I watched the whole thing on the monitor.

Jan, you are still a tough cookie! Lol. Unfortunately a lot of us had all scopes without sedation, and Lord knows I've had my share over the past 14 years! They wanted me sedated for my last pouchoscopy, which was 3 years ago. Sorry to hijack Bubbapups thread, but out of curiosity how often are folks getting a pouchoscopy these days? Just curious especially wanted yours and Scott's thoughts. Hope everyone is well, and has a blessed Thanksgiving. We are still in restoration and recovery mode here in WNC from Helene. Some of the worst devastation and disaster I've ever seen, and unfortunately I've seen a lot in my past 30 plus years doing fire/rescue response mode

Blessings,

Diesel

I don’t think I am tough at all, but my pouchoscopies are nothing like a colonoscopy. I have been getting them without sedation since 1995 without issue. Definitely more comfortable since I have been in pouchitis remission.

Anyway, I get mine about every 3 years or so. My biopsies have always been negative for dysplasia.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving everyone.
