I’m new here. Just had my second surgery on Wednesday Feb 28th resulting in a newly constructed pouch, and a loop ileostomy.

The surgery went well, I had no complications in recovery, and I was sent home on Sunday. I was supposed to go home on Saturday but my output was too high to let me go, which leads me to the point of my post.

My end ileostomy was awesome. I never had any issues with high output or hydration. My output was always a very thick consistency and I only emptied 3-5 times in a 24 hour period.

With this loop ileostomy I have yet to see anything but pure liquid and emptying a lot more than I’d like.  I’m taking meds to slow things down and reduce output, which is working.

I realize my surgery was just last week and there’s an adjustment period, but do things eventually thicken up? Or is thick output a thing of the past? 😭

I also leak at night.  I wake up like I peed myself. Not a huge issue during the day. Some may pass when peeing, but mostly when I sleep. I wake up pretty wet. I’ve read this is temporary. i lift very heavy weights at the gym 6 days a week so i have a pretty strong core. I’m very athletic. Figured that would help but i guess not.

Do both of these things get better?

Yes, I had the same issue after surgery 2 of 3. Output got looser because now ostomy is diverted to two parts. There is a downstream(your new j pouch) not in use, so you have shorter intestine absorbing water. You will have an enema exam before your last surgery. And you will see it is a fairly long path from your stoma to your j pouch. I think you should ask your doctor if you are concerned about dehydration.

Leakage only happened first couple weeks on me. I placed a pad on my bed.

I must make a bowel movement when peeing. And it took me 1 month to urinate standing up. I just had my last stage surgery. Now this problem back again.
