Hello!

My name is Brad and I am about 3 and 1/2 years post take down. I have had my fair share of struggles up until this point since my takedown surgery, but the past 3 months have been absolutely horrible at night. I have tried everything I can think of to help me make it through a night without completely having an accident while I sleep. I have tried Metamucil, skipping dinner altogether, peanut butter before bed, as well as other things. I sleep very deep so most of the time I have an accident, I don't even wake up for awhile to find it happened. But it is every single night, and it is not just a small leakage. I am full on emptying everything while I sleep. I can take a nap for 15 minutes on the couch during the day, and I will have an accident. No matter what I do I cannot just sleep and make it through, or even wake up in time to go to the restroom. Like I said, this has been a minor issue up until the last 3 or so months. Nothing has changed with my mediations or my diet compared to before, but I am at a loss. Washing clothes and trying to clean myself off every morning is becoming exhausting and frustrating.

Any advice on what I can do or how I can stop this from happening?

Thank you!

You only talk about nighttime. Did you digestion get worse than before that past 3 months? Do you have more BM with more liquid and urgency?

Did you have a scope that showed pouchitis? If so, you might have to switch to another antibiotic (for example Cipro combined with Flagyl). Have you tried probiotics at the end and after antibiotics treatment?

Hi Brad,

I am so sorry you’re having these issues. I have had the same problem in the past. It is awful.

my GI Doc prescribed Xifaxin 3x daily for 28 days. It is expensive but there are manufacture coupons out there. That has helped. More recently I took Budesonide 9mg every morning for several months. That seemed to do the trick! I also take VSL #3 probiotic 2x daily and eat Metamucil wafers daily. As of right now ( knock on wood) I have not had a nighttime accident for a few months which is wonderful.

I would also eat very bland food at that time. Pretty much no veggies. Only food that I know doesn’t bother me.

I wish you all the best

I highly recommend combining metamucil and immodium.  You need to slow down your intestines and use metamucil to help absorb the liquid and stomach acid.  Experiment the right amount for you.  I take 2 heaping teaspoons first thing in the morning with 1 immodium.  I add 2 to 4 capsules of metamucil with everything i eat drink that isnt water.  Immodium 1 hour before bed time and make sure you go to the bathroom a couple of times before bed.  This should help.  Also take a gax reducer like gasex.  Wear depends as a support in case so you wont have a lot of cleanup.  When you find the right combination to slow you down, you will be so happy and will feel more normal again.
