Hello J pouch friends,

I have tried a few different products for skin breakdown and butt burn associated with the j pouch surgery like aquaphor, desitin, etc. The desitin or other zinc products seem to work well but they stain my clothes.

Has anyone had success with ointments that don't stain clothing? Does Vasline work?? Anyone know a good remedy to get the stains out of my clothing?

Alternatively, has anyone had success with other remedies and don't even need to use ointment at all? Like a bidet etc.

Thanks so much. This has been a struggle of mine for years so I'm just ready to have relief from this.

A handheld bidet has saved my skin. If you don't want to install an actual bidet, I suggest the handheld one. Can get it on Amazon for a decent price. In regards to barrier cream, I switch between Calmoseptine and Triple Paste. The Calmoseptine has menthol in it, so if you are raw back there, be careful as it can be a little jarring. I use the Triple Paste, which has zinc oxide in it, when my bottom feels raw.

Ezzy, I had the same or similar issue.  After a number of doctors and testing, I found out that I am actually allergic to a number of things.  They are mostly topical allergies.  If I eat something to which I am allergic, it causes on my skin down under when it passes through.  As an example, tomatoes are absolutely the worst thing for me and my skin.

Hi Mary O - thanks for your reply. I don’t know what changed within me but the food sensitivities never get better for more than a day now. I am in a constant irritated state and I was wondering if you’ve gone to  an allergist for help. I went to one years ago but because I am not “allergic” to any of the foods he didn’t prescribe anything . I suppose if it’s just a sensitivity, I just have to try to avoid  those foods. I hope you have managed to keep your skin clear of flares. Anything different you can recommend I try would be appreciated.

The only way I keep my skin clear is to avoid the problematic foods.  Believe me, it's worth it.  For a short while, I eliminated the ones that I was highly allergic to but continued with food that was much less so (according to the allergy tests).  It generally wasn't worth it.  I continue to eat chocolate, drink black tea and a couple of other things that I "shouldn't".  It's tolerable.  But I'll never eat a tomato again and it's worth it.  (these are my allergies, of course.  everyone is different.)

I went to dermatologist because my butt was so raw.  He gave me two crimes to use in conjunction...ketoconazale and triamcinolone acetone.  I use them 2x a day.  I will also use zinc before bed if needed.  I also put a layer of Vaseline on top a couple of times a day.  Creates a barrier from leakage.   Am 16 years out from surgery.  The problems started about 3 years ago.  First 10 years or so no issues.   Thanks for the bidet advise

I use on top of each other in the morning before work if I am running late.  I try to use the ketoconazole first normally and wait about half hour and then the triamcinolone...it is thicker.  Then head off to work.  In evening I do ketoconazole when I return home and the other before bed.  So I try and do some space between.  Hope it works for you.  Unless I am having lots of issues, it works.  Went to dermatologist when the surgeon was horrified about my butt.  But even with occasional issues, healing seems to be faster.   I throw the Vaseline on top before bed... a just in case barrier.  Good luck

Hi, I know I’m very late to this discussion, but I’ve had a lot of bile salt diarrhea, and the pain is indescribable. I had my ileoanal anastomosis in the 1980’s and just recently found a product that works incredibly well. It’s made by Medline, and it’s called Olivamine Calazime skin protectant paste. You can find it online. I got mine from a colorectal surgeon when I was having trouble with fissures brought about by a combination of SIBO and retrograde cricopharyngeal disorder (I can’t burp, never have. Had two procedures to try to treat it but still can’t burp. So much gas, so much pressure  = painful fissures, bile salt diarrhea, and indescribable pain.) This paste is a Godsend. I hope it helps some of you who might be going through the same thing.
