Those of you who have had a diversion – could you tell me what was involved surgically? I.e. what incisions were made?
I’m wondering whether it is done just with an incision for the stoma to come through, or whether it’s more involved than that.
And it would be a loop ileo, right?
Also, how long did you have to stay in hospital?

I had diversion last November due to my malfunctioning j pouch. Mine is a loop ostomy-I think? that’s generally the norm unless you are having the pouch excised at the same time. I had a pretty big incision-same size as with my original j pouch surgeries, but I had a mother load of adhesions to deal with and my surgeon was looking for causes of my problems so maybe it was more invasive that it otherwise would be. I was in hospital for nearly 2 weeks but I was really in bad shape before my surgery from being chronically sick, and also had 2 ileus while in hospital. I think my surgeon said the min, stay would have been 5 days or so. The made my stoma at the same place as when my j pouch stoma were made. Recovery was pretty long, c,3 months or so.

I haven’t had any trouble with adhesions so maybe I can hit the five-day minimum if I can persuade a surgeon to do a simple diversion and nothing else. Fingers crossed!
Are you planning to keep your loop ileostomy or will you have to go to an end one?
I had a diversion ostomy for about a year. It was awhile ago but I think they just used the original stoma incision and I recovered easily from the surgery. The loop ostomy was problematic however. I'm happy to be back to the pouch.
I had a diversion due to a septic abscess. The surgeon was able to do the diversion and ostomy creation laproscopically, no big incision. I was warned ahead of time, however, that they might have to open me up, but happily that didn't need to be done. I got an end ileostomy - I was planning to remove the jpouch a year or so later (abscess had to heal, first). I was out of the hospital in 3 days, but had to return due to ileus. An FYI - there was a discharge out the rectal area until I had the pouch removed. Sometimes this discharge was pretty voluminous, I was very glad when the pouch was removed and this discharge stopped.

Yes, I remember my loop ileo in my original surgery schedule was troublesome, although I didn’t have it for long.
I am hoping that if I can get the surgeon to agree to a diversion, he’ll later agree to create a second j-pouch.

Oh dear, I hear NG tubes are pretty unpleasant. Ten days must have been alarming.

I have PTSD now (didn’t have it back in 1999/2000 when my original surgeries happened) and am worried that a long hospital stay would be too much of a strain on my mental health.

I had a lot of other stuff going on due to the septic abscess, gastritis, and more, so the length of my stay with the ileus may not have been typical. It does help to walk as much as you can after the surgery, and take it easy on the pain meds if possible. I hope everything works out well for you.
