I was on it for a few weeks prior to my colectomy to maintain some nutrition and avoid having to be on TPN.

I considered it pretty awful. The taste was much, much worse than Ensure or Boost. But, it did keep me from loosing too much weight before surgery. I believe the one I was on was called Peptomin. My memory is a bit sketchy as it occurred in 1995.

Before the jpouch, I drank elemental shakes during UC flares to give my bowel a rest.  I also used the shakes post-op to recover from the surgeries. Today I still drink 1-2 elemental shakes a day to add additional calories and nutrients. Gaining weight back with a jpouch has been a challenge for me and the shakes help.

Thanks you both for you replies. It sounds like the reason for both of you was mainly about maintaining calories and bowel rest but not to bring on remission.

The elemental shake diet i was using is promoted as a way to bring about remission. But I use also as to supplement my regular diet.

The elemental shakes I use are Absorb Plus. It’s on Amazon but you may do better direct.
